Two million granted citizenships since Merdeka

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 The government revealed today that over two million people have become citizens since Merdeka.

In a written response to Karpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor), the Home Ministry also said that until April 30 this year, there are a total of 289,705 people with permanent resident status in Malaysia.

The number of those awarded full citizenships after Merdeka in 1957 until April this year is 2,033,857 people, the ministry said.

Karpal had asked the ministry to state the number of those with permanent resident status until April 30 this year as well as the number of those granted full citizenships since Merdeka 1957.

The question comes in the wake of repeated accusations against the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration by the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) federal opposition pact.

Sabah, long defined as a BN fortress, has long been plagued by the rampant influx of illegal immigrants, a problem locals allege to be exacerbated by a purported government-sanctioned programme granting citizenship to foreigners in return for electoral support under the so-called Project IC.
