Putrajaya insists asylum swap best way to tackle human trafficking

The Gillard administrations popularity has sunk as a result of the hugely controversial deal. Reuters pic KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 The Najib administration is adamant that the refugee swap deal that was deemed illegal by Australias High Court today was the best solution to tackle human trafficking in both countries. A statement from the Home Ministry said that we continue to believe that the agreement between our governments is the best way to tackle the menace of people traffickers in a way that protects the interests of Australia, Malaysia and, above all, the immigrants involved. We are determined to tackle this trade in human misery. In light of todays ruling we will be working closely with the Australian government to determine the best course of action, it added. Man chases out wife for refusing to wear skirt while having sex

KUALA LUMPUR: A man is said to have kicked out his wife for refusing to wear a skirt while having sex with him. According to Sin Chew Daily, Wang Wen Yaun from Singapore revealed he was introduced to his Chinese national wife by a roast duck shop owner in September last year and got married a month later. "I fell in love with her at first sight and we got married a month later," the Star Online quoted Yuan as saying. The 40-year-old clerk dumped his 27-year-old wife merely two months later because she refused to wear a skirt and have sex with him but the wife returned to his side in May, agreeing to do all he wanted. "I promised to give her S$100 (RM247) on the first night, and S$300 (RM740) every month after that," he said. Sadly, she still failed to meet his " skirt sex " demand and was again chased out of the house two weeks later.

Bygones, MCA says of Hisham putdown

Dr Chua said voicing his reaction to Hishammuddins remark would invite inflammatory response. File pic KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 MCA leaders today refrained from criticising Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein despite a revelation that he had blamed Barisan Nasionals (BN) Chinese party in 2007 for failing to contain fallout over Umno members racially-charged speeches from 2006. Instead, they pointed out that the Umno man had already made a public apology over the issue in 2008. A leaked United States diplomatic cable released today had quoted the then Umno Youth chief as blaming MCA for being too weak to contain the fallout from racial rhetoric at the 2006 Umno general assembly. MCA leaders told The Malaysian Insider today, however, that this did not reflect Hishammuddins current views of his BN colleagues. This happened four years ago. You cant say that this is his current stand, MCA vice president Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai said today. The deputy finance minister insisted that the situati

PAS says Reds heroes before Merdeka but not after

Image
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 PAS moved to contain the fallout from Mohamad Sabus controversial comments on the Bukit Kepong Incident, with its information chief arguing that there was nothing wrong with calling communists heroes but limited to their pre-Merdeka exploits. Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said that while anyone who fought the British colonial government before Merdeka including the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) should logically be called independence fighters, the same could not be said of communists who waged a guerrilla war against the Malaysian government after independence. In 1950, were the communists fighting against the colonialists or the country? Or course it was the British colonialists. That is the reality because the nation was not yet independent, so those they (CPM) fought against were the British government and those seen to be collaborating with the British to rule over Tanah Melayu, he said in a statement today. After Merdeka (in 1957), were the communists figh

Cable: Hisham blamed MCA for not containing Umno fallout

Hishammuddins unsheathing of a keris during 2005 Umno assembly had provoked Chinese BN leaders. File pic KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein had suggested in 2007 that MCA was at fault for being too weak to manage the reaction of non-Malays to the racially-charged rhetoric of the 2006 Umno general assembly. Hishammuddin who was the Umno Youth chief then had told diplomats from the United States that Umnos race rhetoric was necessary to vent the frustrations of the Malays, according to a leaked US cable released on Malaysia Today. According to the diplomatic note sent to Washington, Hishammuddin had also told the US ambassador here that Washington should expect similar anti-US rhetoric occasionally, but that those on the receiving end of these attacks should not fear as the government would not allow it to get out of hand. The countrys racial splits are now more pronounced, and Malays still do not feel on par with other races. The Malay youth became overly emotional

Route to nation building

They first met each other in Khuen Hean Chinese primary school in Changkat Kruing, Sitiawan almost four decades ago. It was a touching moment when the duo met up again, during a talk at the SMJK Yuk Choy in Ipoh recently and recalled their good old days in the school. Yuk Choy principal Lee Hah, who taught Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon at Khuen Hean, was proud to note that he was a model student and the best all-round student at the school. Dr Mah, a cardiologist by training, also emerged the best all-round student at the Anglo Chinese School in Sitiawan where he completed his Upper Six. At 46 now, the Chenderiang assemblyman and state executive councillor has this advice for the students in Yuk Choy: Cherish your teachers who had made an impact on your lives. Citing Lee for instance, he said the educators dedication in teaching and guiding him had contributed to the person he is today. Dr Mah also advised students to give their best in whatever they had been entrusted to do, pointing out tha

Dont neglect other communities, race-based political parties told

Race-based political parties should not neglect the interests of other ethnic groups, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said. Although MCA is a Chinese-based party, it also looks into the welfare of those in other communities, Dr Chua added. Citing the 1MCA Medical Foundation as an example, Dr Chua said 25% of the RM2.5mil fund had been given out to Indian patients. The MCA, he noted, was familiar with the plight of the Indians as the Chinese faced similar problems. Both communities have problems related to the allocation of funds and scholarships, education and job opportunities in the public administration. By helping the Indian community, MCA is proving that it cares for the other ethnic groups, he said during a dialogue with Indian leaders from non-governmental organisations at the Chang Lung Association here on Sunday. Earlier during the dialogue, SJK (T) Gopeng Parent-Teacher Association chairman K. Rajandran sought Dr Chuas help to rebuild the 46-year-old school. The si

Three firms shortlisted for nuclear power PR campaign

Nuclear power has been met with renewed concerns following the Fukushima plant disaster in Japan. Reuters pic KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 The government is searching for a public relations agency to help build public support for nuclear power, as part of a plan to make the country ready for an alternative energy source by 2013. The Holmes Report, a New York-based publication that serves the public relations community, reported this week that the Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation (MNPC), a government body formed in January to spearhead the deployment of nuclear energy, is understood to have shortlisted three firms for the sensitive project. It is understood that a formal pitch is yet to take place. A source involved in the process said that fees had not been confirmed, but were expected to be in the seven-figure range, the report said. The invitation for an international public relations effort to boost support for nuclear energy could spark controversy after the recent row over reports tha

Let it rain: Dutch drivers scoop up swirling cash

MAASTRICHT (NETHERLANDS): The fantasy of seeing banknotes fluttering down from the sky came true for Dutch motorists after a package containing cash apparently fell from a bank transport truck and broke open. The incident triggered a dangerous scramble for the euro bills Monday on the busy A2 highway near Maastricht, as people parked cars on the road's shoulder and ran to scoop up loose notes. Police in the southern Dutch province of Limburg confirmed in their Twitter feed "it briefly rained bank bills." Reporter Rudy Bouma told national broadcaster NOS he saw people grabbing handfuls of cash before hopping back into their cars and driving away. It was not clear how much cash was lost, or how it could have fallen from the truck.

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 30 The Hari Raya Aidilfitri Malaysia open house to be held in Penang later this month has nothing to do with politics, says Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim. The event on September 11 was to unite Malaysians by getting them to better appreciate the 1Malaysia concept, Bernama Online quoted Rais as saying. Said Rais: This celebration is to serve as a bridge for any divide, and we are not having it for any political reasons. Selamat Menyambut Hari Kemerdekaan Ke-54

Image

Anwar tells Najib to reform polls regardless of popularity

SHAH ALAM, Aug 30 Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged his political foe Datuk Seri Najib Razak to improve the electoral process regardless of the indicated drip in the prime ministers popularity. A survey by independent pollster Merdeka Center released yesterday found that 59 per cent of Malaysians approved of Najibs leadership, down six points in the past three months, and 13 points lower than his high of 72 per cent in May last year. Anwar, at Khalids open house, says it is imperative for the countrys leaders to ensure free and fair elections. Australian refugee swap could resume within a week

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 Australia could start sending asylum seekers to Malaysia as early as next week if the High Court there rules in favour of the refugee swap tomorrow, The Australian Online reported. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) told the national daily its staff were on standby to accept arrivals as early as Thursday if the Australian High Court allowed the Malaysian Solution to go through. Australian Immigration Minister Chris Bowens office also confirmed that two transit centres in Port Dickson were ready to accept transfers, with no further updates to be completed. The ministers spokesman, however, would not speculate on when transfers would commence, before the High Court ruling tomorrow. IOM regional representative Chris Lom told The Australian Online that if the High Court ruled in Canberras favour, it would be feasible that transfers could begin as early as next week. He said IOM would provide medical staff, social workers and humanitarian staff to dea

Tun Dr Mahathir: Part of efforts to disparage leaders of old. PUTRAJAYA, Aug 30 - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has accused PAS of idolising communists and disparaging the founding fathers of Malaysia and Umno. The influential former prime minister told reporters today that recent comments by PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu "is part of efforts to disparage leaders of old maybe because they are related to Umno and to idolise communists." "I did not expect this to happen but unfortunately the ones who are pushing this trend is PAS. This trend has continued up to the point where they are idolising communists who killed so many of our security personnel," he said at the prime minister's Hari Raya open house. Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister said that "there is no reason to say that communists fought for independence. They fought for independence only so they can takeover the country and turn it into a communist country." "This is not a fight

(Free Malaysia Today) - In the second part of this interview, Stanley Koh talks about the relevance of MCA to the Chinese community and on other issues that may have an impact on the election performance of MCA, the second largest BN component party. Koh is a seasoned observer of MCA politics, having been the party’s head of research unit. FMT: Why does MCA find it so difficult to convince the public that it is still relevant to the Chinese community? Is the rank and file still in a fighting spirit? Koh: You know, there is a Chinese saying: ‘Bu dao Huang He xin bu si’. This is derived from the old Chinese belief that when a person dies, the spirit will have to cross the Yellow River (Huang He), and when the person discovers that the nails on his finger and toes have dropped off, the final reality of death is imminent. This is not the first time that MCA has come so close to political dea

30,000 in Kapit hit by drought

SIBU, Aug 30 Drought in the Kapit division of Sarawak is drying up wells and streams and has made stretches of the Rajang River impassable to boats, affecting more than 30,000 people who are now facing a water shortage and transportation problems. Thirty of the 45 schools in the division are also affected by the water shortage. It is a blessing for the students that their schools are now closed for the Hari Raya holidays, Kapit Resident Dahim Dandot was quoted as saying. The Borneo Post newspaper today quoted him as saying that the authorities might have to alert the Prime Ministers Department to declare a state of emergency there if the problem persists for the next 18 days. The shallow stretches of the river between Kapit and Belaga towns had forced express boat operators to suspend services, said Dahim. Many people in Kapit believe that their water woes started in early October last year when the Bakun dam was impounded. According to Bernama, although water is released from the da

Put competence first, Guan Eng tells Malaysians

Image
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 Malaysians must put character and competence above race before the country can overcome its shortcomings and thrive amid greater competition worldwide, Lim Guan Eng said. The DAP secretary-general said that while the nation has made much economic progress since independence, the time has come for Malaysians to abandon failed policies in favour of new ones to build better prospects and prepare the next generation for the challenges of globalisation. We must impress on our young that there is no substitute for competence. Neither is there any alternative to innovation and creativity as the roadmap towards high-income status. But first we must be comfortable as Malaysians, Lim (picture) said in his National Day message today. There must be a sense of Malaysian identity that what we are is more important than who we are; that the content of our character is more important than the colour of our skin and that how we connect with other Malaysians is more important than

Najibs approval rating has hit its lowest point since last May. While they agreed the dip reported by Merdeka Centers latest survey yesterday was unsurprising, the leaders chose to remain cautious over the implications, saying the numbers may not necessarily reflect a positive swing towards the federal opposition. Lim said the PM has been desperately trying to regain lost ground. The independent pollsters survey revealed that Najibs approval rating hit its lowest point since last May at 59 per cent, fuelled by rising concerns over the surge in living costs and his governments handling of the tumultuous July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally.
