No more bah-kut-teh by order of Shuzheng!

Recently blogger Shuzheng wrote a letter to Malaysiakini titled 'Malaysian First' requires doing a Ridhuan Tee . Obviously he is against Lim Kit Siangs Malaysian First, going to the extent of accusing Lim of denying his ancestral roots. He erroneously assumed the consequence of Lims proposal would be along his very narrow-minded logic, arguing the DAP leaders espoused ideology of Malaysian First requires (his words) ... foremost, the subjugation of an existing culture, an individual identity, after which to be replaced by an indescribable unknown quantity, a closet of rejects all dissimilar in size, fitting nobody, and must be sliced up for stitching into a one-size-fits-all. Balderdash, and that's an Anglophilic word, old chap. To him, Malaysian First is a 'beyond race' politics conducted purely by the Chinese groups, DAP most fervently. It is so far the highest political expression to a cultural phenomenon, a whole 'pendatang' group ejecting its ancestry

Taikor business blog

The guys at Taikors and Taikuns, a new business blog, are really on the roll. Their latest scoops are being aired by Business FM, everybody's favorite station, and I've been asked quite a few times if I knew the person/people behind www.tnt.net.my. An inquirer asked if the site was run by people linked to the tycoon Syed Mokhtar al-Bukhary! I've been following the blog for a while (it's been on my blogroll and I've made an earlier posting here). The latest "scoop", which will be published by a business daily tomorrow quoting the website, is on a said proposal by Syed Mokhtar's MMC to buy the entire stake in UEM for RM15.6 billion. The site has also reported a couple of weeks ago that the Prime Minister will launch the RM15 billion Matrade project to be undertaken by Naza-TTDI on November 11. Yes, they were specific on the date and so far, as far as I know, this hasn't been denied. See What Pakatan Rakyat Gotta Say?

James Fallows Has This To Write About Malaysia In An Influential Atlantic Magazine!

Image
By Barking Magpie I met James Fallows in Kuala Lumpur many years ago, where he once lived with his wife at Lorong Kuda Lari near Ampang. The house was a huge colonial bungalow and when he came to receive me he was a tall, gangly and smiling and said "come in!" I went there simply because I wanted him to autograph a copy of my Atlantic magazine that I had subscribed for the last four years until 1989. He is now a National Correspondent for The Atlantic, an influential magazine read by every decision maker of the USA, if not the rest of the English speaking world. This 25-year veteran of the magazine and former speechwriter for Jimmy Carter, wrote recently on Prime Minister Dato' Sri Najib Tun Razak (while the PM was in New York) and an impression that he wrote in his magazine is something worth mentioning. James Fallows is a National Correspondent for The Atlantic. A 25-year veteran of the magazine and former speechwriter for Jimmy Carter, he is also an instrument-rated pi

STA – restriction or facilitation?

Image
Putik Lada By KONG SI YING The Dewan Rakyat passed the Strategic Trade Bill on April 5, committing the country to the monumental and painful task of ensuring the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. POST-9/11, the term “weapons of mass destruction” (WMD) was frequently bandied about. To many civilians who were fortunately not affected by certain world events, it was easy to feel disconnected from the fear and the hype. Thus when the Strategic Trade Act 2010 (STA) was introduced, many could be forgiven for dismissing its relevance to their everyday lives. Its stated purpose, after all, was the non-proliferation of WMD. Also known as export control, it involves a centralised system monitoring the movement of items, technology and knowhow that could potentially be used to make, store or deploy WMD. The STA’s effects are extremely far-reaching. Certain semiconductors, metals, chemicals and many more that are used regularly in industry for civilian appli

Establish a crime and corruption commission – Josie M. Fernandez

Image
Combating corruption and crime are two of the greatest challenges of the Government. Increasing corruption and crime are very disturbing as both impact the social and economic spheres of lives of citizens. Reports of murders, human trafficking, child abuse, commercial sex, smuggling of goods, drugs, illegal gambling, and car thefts do not shock Malaysian anymore. The link between organized crime and corruption is nothing complex, It’s not rocket science. The objective of organized crime is to make money and profits. Criminals want to keep increasing their profits. The channel to continue committing crimes and increase profits is to corrupt those who are entrusted with jobs and functions to eliminate crime. Worldwide studies on corruption show that the consequence of organized crime is the corruption of people in important positions. There are calls to revive the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission which died at its inception. However, the conceived Independe

Dr M: Najib will die a very sorrowful man ... A complete failure ?

Dr M: Vision 2020 may not be achievable By Teoh El Sen - Free Malaysia Today, KUALA LUMPUR: The architect of Vision 2020 Mahathir Mohamad has again cast doubts on whether the goal of this grand plan – to transform Malaysia into a fully developed nation – is achievable. The former prime minister thinks the goal is unattainable if the nation continues to focus on foreign direct investments (FDI). "My fear is that Vision 2020 is not achievable; maybe a little later, but not in 2020. It will not be achieved if we continue to solicit FDI,” he said here today, reaffirming a position he has been holding these recent months. He said Malaysia should restructure and adopt a different strategy, specifically focusing on domestic direct investments. "Vision 2020 is good. We should not have a different vision. At the moment, we are still talking about FDI. We go to other countries and talk about FDI but countries like South Korea and Japan did no

EXCLUSIVE! -- PKR is launching a new smartphone brand AND entering the entertainment world! These are the real stories behind the chaotic PKR division elections, which were missed by the mainstream media, alternative media and bloggers Think under, over and through the box, plus verification from the renowned Lempoyang News Agency, helped bring to light these covert PKR plans to build on their experience and know-how in politics to expand into the telecommunications and entertainment world. PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution had described the disturbances at several division meetings `as teething problems. However, the media had failed to thoroughly scrutinise the following statement: Video recordings via mobile phones show the disturbance was caused by individuals who are not party members. Now, which mobile phone in the market can do that? No, not in merely recording video, which even my cheapo RM230 Nokia 2630 can do. But the ability to recognise faces, whic

Perkasa 'warriors' getting weirder by the minute

'Can someone enlighten me as to who is actually disrupting racial harmony here? If candlelight vigils are seditious, then what do you call this?' Perkasa declares 'war' against Namewee BTN: It's time the Malays bangkit (rise) and declare 'war' against Perkasa as they are really damaging the name of the Malay race. The bigots in Perkasa acted just like hooligans and the biggest joke was calling Namewee a coward for not coming out to meet 50 over morons from Perkasa who claimed to be Malay warriors. I'm no fan of Namewee but I believe in this situation he acted wiser than these 'Malay warriors'. Mind you, when you have those bigots from Perkasa isolated and not in group, then you will see the real face of a coward. Dood: Under normal circumstances, the police would have acted against Perkasa for trying to intimidate, threaten and harass someone (who, I might add, has not been found guilty of anything). If anyone else had done this, or if some peo

Who should be worried about Perkasa? — Tay Tian Yan

September 30, 2010 SEPT 30 — If Perkasa guys like Ibrahim Ali follow the political developments in the US, especially those on the Tea Party, they should be happy like birds! Indeed, the Tea Party has stolen a lot of limelight of late. Some GOP rightists associated with the Tea Party have jostled out veteran Republicans to become the GOP senatorial candidates. The most astonishing is none other than Christine O’Donnell, a down and out political rookie known for her freak talks, including her advocacy of asceticism, objection to the use of condoms, etc. That said, she emerged victorious in the Republican primaries in Delaware, beating her moderate rival, to book her ticket for the upcoming state senatorial election. The same thing also took place in other states like Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Alaska, Kentucky and Florida. The Tea Party does not need to register itself as a political party. It has infiltrated right into the core of the Republican P

That is not the world we live in today, nor the reality we should aspire for us Malaysians. This exclusionist economic philosophy is why every plan on the plate today will fail: the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), New Economic Model (NEM), 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP), etc. Fail meaning the en

Fvck You Syed Akbar Ali

Nirwant comment on Syed Bakar's article on Perkasa. (I am sorry to borrow your site to post this long rebuttal I had prepared in response to an article - Perkasa - posted by Syed Akbar. Rgds) nirwant said... Perkasa? Relevant? Syed, who you trying to fool? Looks like most readers have been wise enough to see through the charade of your falsehoods. Syed, you could have increased the mileage you expected, if you had written this piece in Malay. After all, you surely did not hope that the ordinary Malay would have understood the spin you were attempting to sell, did you, what with the success of our education policies at leaving the younger generation of Malays and others so seriously impaired and handicapped in their language skills? Why do you keep frightening the Malays over the potential loss of their political migh, t when you, for a fact, know that there is not even the remotest likelihood of this happening? Why make comparisons with Singapore? And, why lie about the alleged suf

Vision 2020: Derailed by racial, religious politicking not FDI

Image
Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle Former premier Mahathir Mohamad is right in warning that Vision 2020 will be not be achieved, but the reason is not due to Malaysia’s reliance on foreign direct investment, rather it will fail because of the incessant racial and religious politicking in the country, pundits said on Thursday. “Tun Dr Mahathir is absolutely right in that Vision 2020 cannot be achieved based on the current outlook, where foriegn investors do not regard Malaysia as a prime destination anymore,” Ramon Navaratnam, chairman of the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute, told Malaysia Chronicle. “We as Malaysians therefore urge him as an elder statesman to show the leadership in guiding the country towards a more conducive and harmonious environment for both the citizen and the investor. Tun Mahathir can play a leading role in stopping the religious and racial bigotry that is now clearly undermining both our society and economy.” Vision 2020 to stay a vision, ETP pie-in-the

Public Complaints Bureau to probe BTN's Hamim on Thurs

Image
KUALA LUMPUR (Star) - National Civics Bureau (BTN) assistant director Hamim Husin has been summoned to the Public Complaints Bureau office to clarify on Thursday his alleged racist remarks. Hamim has denied making the remarks. Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk T. Murugiah said that the bureau had received many complaints regarding the remarks Hamim had reportedly made at a Puteri Umno event on Monday that were offensive to the Chinese and Indian communities and the bureau needed to investigate the matter. The report on the investigation would be sent to the Public Services Department, he said in a statement late Wednesday. The Cabinet, earlier Wednesday, had instructed the Chief Secretary to the Government to investigate Hamim’s alleged remarks. Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said that all the Cabinet ministers were upset about the allegations and wanted a full investigation. However, he pointed out that everyone was relying on a report

Umno’s fight to stay in power is threat to stability, says report

By Yow Hong Chieh September 30, 2010 Najib faces an uphill struggle to sell his New Economic Model to the Malay community. — File pic KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — A recent report by The Economist has singled out intrigues within Umno and the ruling party’s determination to stay in power at all costs as the biggest threats to political stability in Malaysia. The Economist Intelligence Unit country report also suggested that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) would make gains, but was “unlikely to garner enough parliamentary seats to form a majority government.” Malaysia’s stability over the last five decades has depended on three “steadying factors”: Barisan Nasional’s (BN) firm hold on power, Umno’s tight control of BN and Malay majority support for Umno,” said the magazine’s Intelligence Report on Malaysia for October. It noted, however, that all three were no longer a given, as shown by BN’s poor showing in Election 2008 and the historic sweep by PR parties of five states and 82 parliamentary seats. “Th
