PM: Prosperity and peace for young Malaysians

The Government has delivered stability, prosperity and peace for the next generation of Malaysians, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak . "This is Janji Ditepati (Promises Kept)," he said in his speech at the 55th Merdeka Day celebrations at Dataran Merdeka on Friday. "We have done this for the new generation so that when our young ones take over the reigns of the country we leave them with an ideal country. "I am for you," added Najib, referring to the song "IM4U" composed by the Youth and Sports Ministry. Thousands thronged Dataran Merdeka to watch the annual parade, with many waving the national flag exuberantly and singing patriotic songs. The celebrations were made even more festive with the blaring of vuvuzelas in the air as people shouted "Satu Malaysia!" and "Janji Ditepati". A few extra creative individuals stood out from the crowd by wearing outfits made with the national flag. The celebrations

But to have a "cucu" born on an auspices day for the nation like today, this is especially a special cucu. Alhamdulillah, both mother and baby are fine. The went into the hospital's labor room since aftermoon. Its been one long day for the parenrs, especially the mother and the grandparents. Before we forget, the baby's a boy. So will he be named Abdul Rahman in honour of our first Prime Minister and Father of Independence? We would love if it is so. But that's the parents' call, even if it's the second for the father. Janji Ditepati a universal theme, says Najib

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said those who question the Merdeka Day celebration theme Janji Ditepati are people who have failed to fulfil their promises. "There is no need to question the theme unless the person who raised it never fulfilled his promises," he said in his speech during the 1Malaysia Aidilfitri Feast at the Darulaman Stadium parking area here. Najib said Janji Ditepati was a universal and Islamic principle because Islam wanted its followers to remember the promises that they made. "The biggest promise that a Muslim makes is to Allah while the promises that we make between humans are important because we gain trust only if we fulfil our promises." Najib said that as the government, Barisan Nasional and its elected representatives had always fulfilled their promises. He added that if Malaysians wished for the country to remain peaceful and stable, they should fulfil their promises to the country. Also attending the event w

14 women get chance to boost income with new machines

Image
Helping hand: Tan (with glasses) discussing with recipients, including Lau (inset), after presenting the sewing machines to them in Nibong Tebal. Single mother Lau Gaik Hooi has been sewing clothes for a living after her fisherman husband, Ooi Hee Meng, died in a motorcycle accident in 2004. The 45-year-old, who has five children aged between 16 and 28, was dealt a second blow when her son, Ooi Boon Lun, 24, was killed in a motorcycle accident last year. Lau earns between RM300 and RM400 a month, sewing uniforms on contract for a factory. She also gets RM15 a day helping fishermen in her neighbourhood clean their catch. Yesterday, she was thrilled after receiving a new sewing machine and embroidery machine worth about RM3,000 from Barisan Nasional Jawi coordinator Tan Cheng Liang at her service centre in Nibong Tebal recently. "With these two new machines, I can take sewing orders from people in neighbouring areas," she said. Lau was among 11 single mothers an

Bird’s nest to ‘fly’ to China again

The protocol for entry of cleaned bird's nest into China will be signed on Sept 20 after it gained support from most local bird's nest associations. The agreement was achieved in a closed-door meeting held between the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry and representatives from 21 registered bird's nest associations here yesterday. Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar and his deputy Datuk Chua Tee Yong met with 100 representatives from the associations in a discussion which ran for five hours. "Although the majority gave their support for the protocol to be signed, some groups (mainly comprising swiftlet farmers) disagreed because they wanted raw uncleaned nests to be included in the protocol," Noh said in a press conference after the meeting at Wisma Tani. "We have, however, advised them that we will pursue this issue in future agreements that may be made with China. "Meanwhile, we need to get our bird's nest industry moving again f

DAP – PAS DRAMA IS JUST A PLOY TO STOP FADING INFLUENCE

Image
The verbal spat between DAP and PAS over Hudud laws is just a drama to drum up their existence the changing political landscape in the country given the changing minds of voters, particularly the new young voters termed as Generation Y. Undeniably, BN's economic transformation programmes have yield certain level of success and the opposition parties are feeling the 'pinch' with their influence and 'charms' fading fast. Their 'attractions' are fast becoming antics for the voters and the BN's success since Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak took over the country's leadership have got them reeling and searching for more new attractions to stop the young voters from running to Najib, vis-à-vis BN. While PKR, the only party in the opposition that is multi-racial, slogging hard to make amends and repair the heavy damages it is facing in Selangor, DAP and PAS – the first Chinese-based and second is Malay-Islamic based – have to stir up things to make their existe

‘Satu negara’ or ‘senegara’

Image
The role of the youth is constantly upheld as crucial in any country, but our demographic situation makes it particularly true here. And our children seem ready to celebrate Merdeka with as much gusto as the crowds of 55 years ago. EVERYONE recognises the picture of Tunku Abdul Rahman and his outstretched palm (now superimposed on the 1Malaysia logo), but many still think he shouted "Merdeka!" three times although it was seven. Few will have heard the awesome version of NegaraKu performed that day, and fewer still will be able to narrate a timeline of key events leading to Merdeka. Perhaps it does not matter; the sight of the democratically elected Prime Minister proclaiming independence on the dais together with the representative of Queen Elizabeth II and the Malay Rulers in the centre of a stadium of multiracial thousands remains a powerful symbol and inspiration of the optimism and unity we yearn to recapture. Alas, today's celebrations will not unite as b

Let’s cry out Merdeka!

Image
Aug 31 will always be a special day as is Sept 16 and it's time for all of us to celebrate. TODAY is our National Day, even for Sarawak although it actually gained independence from the British on July 22, 1963. But somehow calling Aug 31 just our National Day belies the importance of that date since it is, for all intents and purposes, our Independence Day. While the peninsula or Malaya obtained independence from the British on that day in 1957, Sabah also gained independence on the same date but six years later. Anyhow, as an independent nation, we are celebrating our 55th anniversary today and on Sept 16 we will celebrate our 49th anniversary of the formation of Malaysia when Sabah and Sarawak joined the federation. This means we have 15 days to celebrate the formation of Malaysia. It cannot be denied that this year's run-up to Hari Merdeka seemed rather muted and not as grand as previous times. It could be because it comes so soon after Hari Raya Aidil Fitri w

Safety should be a way of life

Image
We must strive towards a safer Malaysia, a nation where people can freely walk the streets and where criminals do not brazenly go about their activities – and where the adage 'crime does not pay' is foremost in people's minds. AN unknown author once said that "Safety isn't just a slogan, it's a way of life". In recent times, news of violent crimes, robberies and many more criminal incidents have been reported in every form of media. Speak to anyone living in the city and chances are that person will share with you a feeling of insecurity in that city. This is a real issue, not one of perception, not one of statistics, but the real feeling of insecurity. If one should form a new nation; law and order would be the paramount ingredient in the creation of the nation. It is important to give the citizens the feeling and the knowledge that the system will protect them and ensure that crime is prevented as much as possible. Further, in any new nat

Liow promises detailed study of Bukit Koman residents’ health woes

The Health Ministry has always closely monitored the health of Bukit Koman residents. Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the area had been consistently monitored since 2009 and urged the residents not to worry as the ministry was working closely in seeking the cause of their problems. "We will conduct a detailed study to identify the root cause of their ailments," he said yesterday, denying allegations that the ministry was treating their claims of cyanide poisoning from a gold mine in the area lightly. Liow explained that a baseline health study team had been formed on July 12 to scrutinise the ailments afflicting Bukit Koman residents in Raub. The team, chaired by Health deputy director-general Dr Lokman Hakim Sulaiman is also collaborating with an anti-cyanide group, Pahang Raub Anti-Cyanide Gold Mining Committee (BCAC), he said as reported by Bernama. Meanwhile in PUTRAJAYA, Dr Lokman said there had been discrepancies in surveys done by the ministry com

Tourism revenue up by RM1bil

Tourist spending in the country increased by 4% in the first half of 2012, generating RM26.8bil in revenue. This was about RM1bil more than that earned in the same period last year, revealed the Tourism Ministry in its latest report. Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said there was steady growth in the sector over the last six months, registering 2.4% increase in tourist arrivals with 11,632,483 entering the country compared with 11,362,862 last year. She said the Asean region continued to be the largest contributor with 73.8% share of total arrivals. Dr Ng attributed the growth to the support from trade partners and increased air connectivity from key destinations like Beijing in China, Hong Kong and Kansai in Japan. "Key international-level tourism events such as the Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix, 1Malaysia International Shoe Festival and Citrawarna are also contributors to the continued growth," said Dr Ng during a press conference at the ministry

Merdeka Day campaign shifts into high gear

Preparation for the Merdeka Day celebration has gained pace with some 300 mini Jalur Gemilang flags being distributed to market-goers and members of the public at Cecil Street Market in Penang. Pengkalan Kota Barisan coordinator Loke Poh Chye said the flags were given in anticipation of the country's 55 years of independence. "While distributing Jalur Gemilang, there is also a petition campaign to collect signatures to urge the people to support the movement to return Penang's free port status and other issues such as affordable housing. "This is a three-month ongoing campaign to gain Penangites' support on these issues," he told a press conference at the market here yesterday. Market-goers were seen grabbing the mini flags and waving it in the air with pride in the spirit of Merdeka. Some 500 eco-friendly reusable grocery bags were also given to the people during the event. Also present were Padang Kota Barisan coordinator Oh Tong Keong and for

Heng: No one will be left behind

Single parents and the underprivileged should seek immediate help from the nearest Welfare Department office so that the government can assist them in various aid programmes, said Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Senator Datuk Heng Seai Kie. She said the ministry had instructed the Welfare Department to investigate each reported case and see what kind of aid could be given. "To ensure that no one is left behind in the country's development, the ministry monitors welfare cases brought up by non- governmental organisations (NGO) or through the media. "An officer will keep tab on such cases and act immediately," she said. She pointed out that there were 104 Welfare Department offices nationwide where the poor and needy could go to seek help. Heng made a special visit to the family of single mother Lim Lee Kheng, 29, at Taman Impian, Alma, near Bukit Mertajam recently after her plight was highlighted in the Chinese vernacular newspapers

BERSIH Mahu Tukar Bendera Malaysia Seperti ala-ala Bendera Republik Singapura, Indonesia!

Namun kalangan orangramai

The trial run for the new Automated Enforcement System (AES) during Hari Raya was a success, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha . "It was a good outcome. Results showed that the cameras were operating smoothly during the test run but no summonses were issued. "The system is a good one and has been implemented in other countries. We want people to be aware and comply with the rules and road regulations as it will help reduce the number of deaths and accidents," he said after the launch of the new Pasar Seni bus hub here yesterday. Due diligence, he said, was bring carried out to ensure everything was in order according to the legal framework and cameras correctly certified before the system could be implemented. Hadi: DAP cannot stop us

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has strongly upheld his party's hudud agenda in the face of opposition from a Pakatan Rakyat partner. He said DAP had no authority to compel PAS to forgo its hudud agenda. "DAP has no power to stop PAS from expressing its right just as PAS cannot stop DAP from objecting to hudud," he added in a statement yesterday. Hadi said PAS had stood by its principles when DAP aired its views during open dialogues. "PAS can collaborate on matters of common interest without imposing its views on others. "We can give and take on some matters, but will not budge on others," Hadi said. He said PAS would not give up its struggle to uphold Islamic laws, adding that the Malacca sultanate centuries ago had imposed syariah laws on Muslims and customary laws on non-Muslims. Stressing that hudud would not be forced on non-Muslims, Hadi said it was clearly a "seasonal issue" that popped up in the run-up to electi

Klang braces for high tides and floods

Klang residents are bracing for flash floods again with heavy rain and high tides predicted for September. At the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) full board meeting, acting president Ehsan Mukri told councillors to be prepared as a combination of the two elements had previously caused massive flooding. "Next week (the first week of September) is when tides would be at the maximum, and we hope it doesn't rain too heavily. "It is normal to get 50mm of rain. But during the floods last week, it was 80mm. "And during the big flood in March, it was more than 90mm," he said. The tidal chart shows that the sea levels would rise between 4.1m to 5.2m at dawn and dusk for the first week of September. He added that the RM5.2mil flood mitigation project would start next week. MPK's Smart Service Squad have been put on standby to provide emergency relief services and flood reports can be made to MPK's operation room at 03-3371 4404. MPK councillor Yew

Ministry wants stiffer laws to ensure rapists receive just sentences

Representatives from the Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry want to meet with Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz to ensure stiffer laws for statutory rape. This came after a public uproar over the "light" sentences handed down in two recent statutory rape cases. In a statement, the ministry said it would discuss with the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department to study laws related to statutory rape to protect the interests of victims and to ensure perpetrators receive just sentences. "We respect the court's decision but are concerned with society's view that the sentences are light and do not commensurate with the crime," it said. Former national youth squad bowler Noor Afizal Azizan and electrician Chuah Guan Jiu were bound over for five years and three years respectively on a RM25,000 good behaviour bond after being found guilty of statutory rape. As Malaysia is a party to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimina

Hudud PAS Menzalimi Mangsa Rogol

Image

Khalid Confirmed That PR's Manifesto Is Just A Game

Image
It seems that Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, Selangor's Chief Minister has come to a dead end when pushed by the question regarding the failure of his government to fulfil the water supply for on free domestic use for first 20 cubic meter each month for the people of Selangor. His response to the media regarding this issue in a press conference after chairing the state's exco meeting two days ago, he said, 'manisfesto is not promise', that has really caused rage among rakyat of Selangor. It is not too much to for me to say that the statement seems 'suicidal' for both him and his party. Perhaps Khalid is unaware that a party runs on a few basic elements: 1. Service record, 2. Ideology, 3. Manifesto. Considering that PR still do not have any service record, and they do not have a concrete ideology, we can then say that PR's win in Selangor was merely from the manifesto which they announced. People of Selangor came to the extend of rejecting BN back in 2008 GE even
