Art and calligraphy masterpieces boost understanding of arts

TWENTY talented local artists showcased their masterpieces in an exhibition of Chinese painting and calligraphy.

More than 100 pieces of inspirational artworks were displayed during the five-day exhibition, which ended Monday, at the Soka Gakkai Malaysia centre in Pasir Puteh, Ipoh.

Illustrious historical figures such as Confucius and Eastern Han Dynasty general Guan Yu, traditional houses in China's countryside, flowers, animals and poems were featured prominently in the paintings and calligraphies.

State Non-Muslim Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, who opened the exhibition last Saturday, described the event as a great opportunity for people to boost their understanding of Chinese artistic works.

"Hopefully, it will inspire more people, especially the young ones, to take up traditional Chinese art.

"It is among the oldest artistic traditions in the world and has always been important to the Chinese community, especially among scholars," he said.

Among the participating artists was 70-year-old retired teacher Cheong Lam San.

Cheong had dedicated more than half of his life to the mainstream of China's art history.

He said young people were less inclined to take up Chinese calligraphy and painting due to stiff competition from contemporary arts such as cartoon and child art.

"There is also a lack of experienced teachers to guide them on the diverse calligraphic styles that exist," said Cheong, who used to take in students and teach them Chinese calligraphy and painting in his younger days.

He added that Chinese calligraphy and painting were more than just visual expressions.

"Practising the art can help one to develop positive characters such as being disciplined and persistent," said Cheong.

The exhibition was jointly organised by the state Non-Muslim Affairs Department and Perak Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Association.
