MCA favourites to bag title this year

MCA are the favourites to win the Datuk Theng Book Cup Malaysia Media Badminton tournament to be held at the Sport Challenger Badminton Hall in Kepong on Saturday.

MCA finished runners-up to Penang Media in the inaugural championship last year. In third place was The Star team.

However, Penang Media will not be taking part in this year's competition.

As part of their preparations for this year's competition, MCA played a friendly match with The Star recently. MCA won 3-2.

Organising chairman Datuk Theng Book said the friendly match gave an indication of both MCA and The Star's preparations for the competition.

"The players are familiar with each other's game. They were able to evaluate each other's strengths and weaknesses.

"This was also the first meeting between them. Both teams are well prepared and will be eager to give their best,'' he said.

Theng Book added that MCA was looking to send two teams for the tournament next year.

MCA are in Group B with Nanyang Press and 1 Titan while The Star are in Group A with Sin Chew Jit Poh and China Press in Division A.

The nine teams in Division B are NTV7, Astro, 8TV, 988, Guang Ming, MCPA, Media Prima, Kepong and RTM.

The champion team in Division A will get RM2,888 in cash, trophies and medals.

The runners-up will receive RM1,888, trophies and medals while the third and fourth placed winners will get RM1,288 and RM888 respectively.

The champion in Division B will get RM688 while the second and third placed will receive RM488 and RM388 respectively.

The sponsors are ManagePay Systems Berhad, AJIYA, Ebara Pumps, Fleet, Kaspersky, Revive, Milo, Guinness Anchor Berhad, Astro, CNI and 3M.
