Stay Out For Malay Unity, PAS Tells BN

A PAS leader is proposing that Barisan Nasional forgo contesting the Galas state seat for the sake of Malay unity.
“I am urging UMNO not to contest if they are serious about Malay unity. It is pointless for them to contest as even if they win, it will not make any difference to the situation in Kelantan,” PAS deputy secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said.
Currently, Barisan through UMNO, only has six out of the 45 state seats, with the rest held by PAS and one by PKR.
Takiyuddin said contesting in the by-election was a waste of resources, especially when it would not leave any impact on the state or national political scene.
He said it would be better for UMNO to focus on the next general election, which many pundits are predicting to be next year.
A state by-election is expected to be call within the next 60 days following the death of the PAS incumbent Che Hashim Sulaima, 48, on Monday.
State UMNO Youth head Anuar Safian accused PAS of having a hidden agenda.
Anuar asked Takiyuddin to refer to Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat who is also PAS spiritual adviser, about the definition of Malay unity.
“As far as UMNO is concerned, the main stumbling block is Nik Abdul Aziz, so Takiyuddin should refer to him instead,” said Anuar.
In a related development, Kelantan UMNO secretary Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar said they were awaiting instructions from party headquarters to activate the election machinery.
“We have not held any discussion on the by-election as we are waiting for the green light from the headquarters.
“We (Barisan) wrested the seat with a more than 1,000-vote majority in 2004 only to lose it in the 2008 general election. We will work hard to recapture it,” Noor Zahidi said.
In the 2008 general election, Che Hashim won with a 646-vote majority. He obtained 4,399 votes while Barisan’s candidate Saufi Deraman received 3,753.
