Many eligible senior citizens not receiving financial aid

MANY senior citizens who require aid are not registered with the Welfare Department, said MCA Public Complaints Bureau legal adviser Datuk Lim Choon Kin.

Lim said many senior citizens of Kampung Chempaka in Petaling Jaya, who came to the mobile service unit required financial assistance.

Some of them are old and their children are not taking care of them so we advise them to register with the Welfare Department. Many of them are eligible to receive between RM100 and RM300 a month, said Lim.

Three officers from the Petaling district Welfare Department were also present at the mobile unit to help in the registration process.

Welfare officer Hussin Uda Itam said they would assess the applicants status to determine if they were eligible.

We will visit their homes to see the condition they are living in. Most of the senior citizens are genuine and do need assistance, he said.

Lim said several handicapped people and single mothers also came to register for assistance.

The mobile units make it easier for them so that they do not have to travel to the branch offcies, said Lim.

Some residents also came with complaints on land titles.

A few of them have applied for their land titles for more than three years but have not obtained it. We will forward their cases to the Land Office.

We also received complaints about flooding in Jalan PJU 1/7 and PJU 1/4 and will follow up the matter with the Petaling Jaya City Council, said Lim.

Bureau deputy chairman Kelvin Chong said language was also a problem for many of the residents in new villag! es.

< p>Most of them cannot speak English or Bahasa Malaysia so we are here to help them translate, he said.

Chong said this was the fifth time they were having their mobile unit service after organising several sessions at Petaling Jaya Old Town and Sungei Way.
