Tuition help from i-TR1M for low-income families

Children from low-income families in Selangor are getting a leg up on their education with the help of the 1Malaysia Tuition for the Rakyat (i-TR1M) programme.

The pilot project has so far provided free tuition to about 10,000 primary and secondary students in at least 10 districts in the state.

Programme implementation central committee member Bur­hanuddin Yusof said the response to i-TR1M had surpassed expectations, with just 5,000 students expected to sign up initially.

"The schools want more but the demand is too high for us to handle right now," he said.

There are 4,000 UPSR students following online tuition lessons and another 5,300 students taking part in either online or conventional tuition for the PMR and SPM examinations.

The targeted students range from average to low performers who come from families earning an average income of RM1,000.

Burhanuddin noted that many students from these families were weak in Mathematics and Science, mainly due to limited exposure and study time.

The programme will include seminars to prepare students for PMR and SPM examinations and also career guidance some time in September and October and this will be extended to Kelantan, Kedah and Perak.

Burhanuddin said i-TR1M would be expanded to the entire country next year depending on the availability of funds.

He said the RM2mil presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Thursday would be enough to cover operational costs in Selangor, which includes salaries for the 350 teachers working on the programme and teaching material.

"Our target is to take on 200,000 students. We hope the Govern­ment can turn this into an annual programme to help Malaysians in the low-income bracket."
