Overgrown trees from neighbour’s vacant house cleared after a long wait

Businessman Law Chia Swee and his family are relieved when finally the overgrown trees from his neighbour's vacant house were cleared.
For about 15 years, the family has been living with the unwelcoming sight of overgrown trees which had turned the back lane of their house into a secondary jungle.
The vacant house has turned "green" over the years and at one time it was also become an abode for drug addicts seeking refuge in the premises.
The cleaning efforts were undertaken by 10 staff from SWM Environment on the very same day Law's plight was highlighted by StarMetro on Monday.
However, Law, 61, and his family members were not around when the cleaning works were carried out as they were away at work.
"We decided to give him the helping hands although cleaning up the area did not come under our jurisdiction,'' supervisor Noor Azwan Nizam Ishak told StarMetro.
He said cutting down the trees started at about 2pm on Monday involving 10 workers and continued the next day at 8am and finished by noon.
Noor Azwan said the company's five-tonne lorry made several trips from the vacant house at Jalan Indah 6/7, in Bukit Indah transporting the cut branches.
He explained the workers only cleared the back lane and the front lane of the vacant house and did not enter into its compound as it needed permission from the house owner.
Johor Wanita MCA head of legal bureau Chang Mei Kee who was at the scene thanked The Star for highlighting Law's problem and SWM Environment for the job well done.
She said despite several complaints made by Law to the relevant authorities previously, no actions were taken by them and hoped in the future they would listen to people's plights.
"With the back lane is now cleared, the Johor Baru Central Municipal Council should serve a notice to the house owner to clean his house once and for all,'' said Chang.
