AN OBSESSION with finding the tastiest, most reasonably priced street food has taken writer Sam Cheong from Kuala Lumpur's busiest streets to little roadside eateries on the outskirts of the city.

Tuesday was a momentous day for Samo, as he is known, when hisFood Trail book, published by The Star, was launched by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen at The Bistro@Saloma Bistro & Theatre Restaurant in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

"I am stirred with a spirit of gratitude that four years' worth of work has been compiled from the Food Trail column into a 160-page, full-colour book that can be used as a reference for those who love good makanplaces around the Klang Valley," said Cheong.

The Food Trail column began in 2008 and Cheong had his work cut out to put together a selection of makan places for the book.

Cheong writes about good Malaysian fare based on tips from ardent foodie followers. Most of the time, he is led by his instincts and his observation of the crowd at a particular stall.

All these translate to the Samo scale, as he calls it, which gives the rating.

For him, there is a lot to learn and enjoy from the authenticity and simplicity of street food.

"Chefs who have studied culinary skills can learn something from street food, especially its simplicity," he said.

Brilliant read : Food Trail fans flipping through Cheong's book.

Samo travels around the Klang Valley and has tried every dish featured in the book. Food Trail also sheds light on the different cultural influences that have given Klang Valley favourites a unique heritage.

Food Trail contains both halal and non-halal fare and incorporates GPS coordinates to provide ease and convenience in locating the shops and stalls.

Tourism Minister Ng said "it was perfect timing" for the book launch as Street Fare promotions begin in December.

"Cheong has made good effort for this wonderful book that is a tremendous boost to the Tourism Ministry's initiatives to promote Malaysian food. We need food directories of this nature as it helps locals and foreigners savour great food with ease. It is a privilege to be here to launch it," she said.

The Star group chief editor and executive director Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai said the book was all set to give an unforgettable culinary experience to those wanting to follow Samo's footsteps.

"Sam has explored every nook and corner to find the most delectable dishes in town, he has put together a food trail to help all foodies on a journey of discovery. He has made access to these places even simpler with GPS coordinates," he said.

The man himself: Cheong (second from right) obligingly signing autographs for his fans.

"Sam's down-to-earth approach and reviews of good food will certainly make you crave for more. Malaysia is a food heaven, so follow the food trail and be inspired.

"While going around, if you find a new place that has given a wondeful gastronomic experience, a place or cuisine that is not featured in the book, please contact Sam, so that we can check it out," added Wong.

Food lovers can get the book at all major bookstores at RM25 a copy.
