Chor: Prices of low-cost houses may rise

SEPANG: Low income earners may have to pay nearly double the cost to own a house under the Government's low-cost housing scheme in the future, depending on the outcome of a study by the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung said RM70,000 a unit would be a more realistic price compared to the current range of between RM35,000 and RM45,000.

.

"The cost of construction materials and workers and other things have gone up, so (the sale price) RM35,000 to RM45,000 is no longer viable.

"We are currently studying when is the best time (to increase the price).

"We are thinking about it, how to go about it," he said at a press conference before launching a seminar on public housing organised by the National Professors Council here Wednesday.

Chor explained that under the People's Housing programme (PPR) managed by the Federal Government, Malaysians whose household income does not exceed RM2,500 can purchase low-cost housing at RM35,000.

State governments on the other hand can request developers to set aside 30% of the land allocated for each of their projects to build low-cost housing at a maximum sale price of RM45,000 per unit.
