The Arab Spring ushered in a new era for countries in north Africa. But whether genuine democracy and the rule of law in their essence will prevail are left to be seen if fundamentalists are to emerge enforcing dogmatic conservatism.
Results from the first Tunisian general elections in late October 2011 since the ouster of longtime President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011 saw the Islamist party Ennahda declared victorious. However, immediately Tunisians voiced alarm that Ennahda's rule may revoke the freedoms associated with Tunisia's secular traditions through rewriting its constitution.
Promises of reforms by the Muslim Brotherhood, which is primarily concerned with doctrinal issues then headed by Morsi Isa El-Ayyat gave Egyptians immense hope following the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak on 11 February 2011. Basking in glory after mediating a truce between Hamas and the Zionist regime on the West Bank last week, Morsi, now as President of Egypt immediately issued presidential decrees giving himself near absolute power and made himself immune to judicial challenges. This move has led to violent clashes.
Similarities between Ennahda, Muslim Brotherhood & PAS
There are striking parallels between the Tunisian and Egyptian experience with PAS in that they are bent on enforcing ultra-conservative interpretation of faith-based edicts to be the law for all civilians despite appearing moderate initially.
PAS has similarly shed its hardline image by portraying themselves to be reaching out to non-Muslims via its "welfare state concept" with empty promises that PAS hudud enactments will not be imposed on non-Muslims. However, PAS as exampled with the storm of indignation against the PAS-led Kota Bharu Municipal Council fining a Chinese non-Muslims hair salon owner when one of its female staff had cut the hair of a male client, PAS has shown that they can and will easily pull the carpet from under one's feet once they have snared the non-Muslim vote.
Malaysians must wake up to the Opposition's descent ploys
DAP has hoodwinked idealistic Malaysians into believing PAS' "welfare state" which subterfuges a theocratic state based on PAS hudud enactments. PAS President Hadi Awang has never hidden his aspiration to amend the Federal Constitution to insert PAS hudud enactments as the supreme law of the land and to turn Malaysia into a PAS Islamic state.
Already in Kelantan and Kedah, non-Muslims employers are subject to moral policing if their employees adorn short sleeves, legalized betting has been outlawed. Non-Muslims risk further extremism, hardship, freedom and economic woes should PAS ever capture Putrajaya abetted by DAP and PKR.
