LIFE has not been a bed of roses for 16-year-old Nor Fatihah Sewah, who was born without her lower limbs, but the shy girl is quick to face the world with a champion's spirit.
After being adopted by Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur at the age of three and receiving a bilateral prosthesis, Nor Fatihah has tried to begin a normal life for herself.
Things are not easy for the teenager as she faces ridicule by schoolmates who joke about her prosthetic legs. However, she moves on with the help of her teachers who encourage her and the support of her disabled parents.
Recently, she received her third fitting at the hotel and is keen on beginning her favourite hobby — sports.
"I enjoy playing badminton and even joined the march past. These new legs are really good and I look forward to using them," she said.
Nor Fatihah is one of the eight recipients of the "Embrace the Gift of Life Christmas Tree" Charity Project by the hotel that began 27 years ago.
The other seven are children who are in dire need of funds for immediate heart surgeries.
Ser Yi Fang, the mother of two-year-old twins Ting Zhi Hao and Ting Zhi Xi, was elated to find out her sons had been chosen to receive a cash donation of RM40,000 for their operation.
The boys suffer from hole-in-the-heart as well as blockage of blood vessels to the lungs and require immediate surgery.
"The surgery has been really remarkable. Zhi Hao was so affected by the problem that he could not move much but now he is so active, I can barely keep up," said Ser.
The yearly project invites individuals and organisations to support the annual fundraising charity project by sponsoring a miniature Christmas tree sugar piece with a minimum donation of RM1,000 in aid of the children.
The miniature Christmas tree sugar pieces were stacked in a conical steel structure to form a giant Christmas tree and the donors' names were prominently displayed on the sugar pieces.
A total of RM180,000 was handed out to the recipients by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen and the hotel's vice-president and general manager Lothar Nessman.
Nessman said the hotel would continue to look out for the children until they reach adulthood and monitor their progress.
He said that children deserved the opportunity to lead a happy, healthy lifestyle and they have been fortunate to have kind-hearted donors including staff, guests and corporate clients.
