CAP wants Penang council to abandon plan on Masjid Negeri

GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers' Association of Penang has expressed disappointment over the Penang Municipal Council's (MPPP) plan to cut and transplant several species of trees in Jalan Masjid Negeri.

CAP president S.M. Mohamed Idris said the plan to make way for a road widening project was akin to "a massacre".

"The trees help to improve the air quality, besides providing shade," he said.

"The council should consider other alternatives to save the trees from being axed," Mohamed Idris said.

"Trees identified as a public hazard should not be killed but instead, cured," he said at a press conference in Jalan Masjid Negeri here yesterday.

On Nov 24, the MPPP's public relations office issued a statement that they would be chopping down 44 trees and transplanting 20 others along the 700m stretch to widen the roads there and to upgrade the drainage system, both of which were scheduled for completion in 2014.

Long-time resident George Cheah, 62, expressed sadness over the council's decision.

He said there was no dialogue between the MPPP and residents in the Bukit Gelugor area prior to this.

Cheah, a retiree, called on the council to stop the project immediately.

In a statement, the council said an arborist, appointed by the project consultant, had identified that out of the 80 trees in the area, only 16 would remain.
