No raining on MCA’s parade

MUAR: Thousands of people who turned up for the MCA mega dinner at the open air Stadium Sultan Ibrahim stayed on despite a drizzle.

The intermittent rain, which began at 6.30pm, did not deter the 8,000-strong crowd who made a beeline for the "Stability Above Chaos" event.

Holding up umbrellas, their attention was fixed on the stage where party leaders addressed them on a variety of issues.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, who thanked the diners for staying on, said it showed that the crowd was with the party "under whatever circumstances".

"Today is the eve of the 15th day of the ninth month in the lunar calendar, and rain is a shower of blessing," he said to the crowd's applause.

On the country's stability and harmony, Dr Chua said it was the duty of every Malaysian to ensure that these continued.

The country's annual economic growth of about 5% this year, added Dr Chua, had surpassed that of Ja-pan's and Singapore's, attributing it to the Economic Transformation Pro-gramme under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's leadership.

Dr Chua said, on the other hand, Pakatan Rakyat was out to confuse the people with false allegations against the Government.

"Pakatan has not been able to show what economic model it has for the country," he pointed out.

"All they do is make pledges, including promising each and every household in the country at least RM4,000 in monthly income," he said, adding that all the pledges the Opposition made would cost the Government over RM200bil a year.

Rousing speech: Dr Chua speaking during the MCA mega dinner in Muar.

Dr Chua said the pledges, which were merely populist policies, could bankrupt the country within two years.

On Pakatan's portrayal as a "corrupt-free" coalition, Dr Chua questioned why its leaders were silent when a former Bank Negara officer made a sworn statement that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had 20 bank accounts (with a total of RM3bil) while he was the Deputy Prime Minister.

Under Pakatan rule, Selangor had allowed one person to monopolise the sand business, he said, adding that sand from the state was priced at RM1,000 per lorry against RM300 a lorry from Johor.

"How can the Selangor Government accord such a privilege to an individual?"
