JOHOR BARU: Residents in Kampung Poh Chee Leng here heave a sigh of relief after officials finally remove fragments of concrete that have clogged a major drain after the retaining walls along the area collapsed recently.
Resident representative Soon Keng Hock, 47, said that residents were very afraid that the collapsed debris would cause major flood problems for residents especially during the rainy season.
"A portion of the retaining walls collapsed on Oct 10 following heavy rains which hit the area.
"Since then, the fragments have slowly been falling into the huge drain causing major obstruction to the flow of water," he said when speaking to reporters.
Soon said that residents quickly lodged a report with the authorities on Oct 20 and were happy that their complaint was addressed quickly.
"We informed Gelang Patah MP Tan Ah Eng who immediately alerted the authorities about our concern.
"Today we can sleep peacefully because the debris has been cleared and authorities will be fixing the damaged area," he said.
Meanwhile, Tan, when met at the village said that she would be requesting for emergency aid of RM150,000 from Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to conduct repairs for the retaining walls.
"We have also engaged a contractor who surveyed the whole wall and have informed us that there are several other weak points along the area.
"As a temporary measure, we will also fix beams along the wall to ensure that it does not collapse again," she said.
Tan also thanked the residents for immediately relaying the information and urged them to continue doing so.
"We need the cooperation of residents and only they know what is actually happening on the ground.
"If they inform us early, we can quickly do our part and help them," she said.
