THREE people from the Seputeh area received cheques from the 1MCA Medical Foundation after their applications were approved.

Fun Swee Lian, 60, has unpaid medical bills from her weekly chemotherapy treatment.

"I am thankful to receive the funds that will help me in my fight against the cancer in my body," she said.

She added that the lump was located at her armpit, close to the ribs as well as vital veins and arteries.

Being unmarried and childless, Fun turned to her sisters, one of whom — Fun Swee Yoke, 58 — accompanied her to the cheque presentation.

"In 2005, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After that, I urged my sisters to do check-up as well.

"Swee Lian only discovered she had early stages of breast cancer in 2007," said Swee Yoke, adding that her sister's treatment costs RM2,190 a week.

Second recipient, Phoon Wai Seng, 51, is suffering from bone cancer at the spine.

"I was told that the surgery will cost RM16,000. If I do not do it soon, my spine will be at risk of collapsing.

"I will have difficulty in walking, among other complications," she said.

Phoon is a housewife and mother of three children between 17 and 25 years old.

Her family has no history of cancer. When she was diagnosed, Phoon found it hard to accept as she had led a healthy lifestyle.

Each woman received a cheque for RM5,000.

As for two-year-old Wong Qi Xuan who cannot hear anything less than 90dB in both ears (bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss), he will receive RM10,000 for a cocklear implant.

Federal Territory MCA 1Malaysia Taskforce chairman Banie Chin said the recipients were from poor families who were not able to afford the medical treatments or surgeries they need.

"The foundation has a guideline to decide who gets the funds.

"The donation may not cover the entire cost that the recipient needs, but it will help," he said.
