Kong slams PKR rep who won’t pay speeding fines

SITIAWAN: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha has slammed a PKR assemblyman in Perak who announced that he would "defy" seven traffic summonses issued to him under the Automated Enforcement System (AES).

He said the assemblyman had disregarded the law and set a bad example to the people.

"As an elected representative, he should not make such an irresponsible statement," he said during a talk on current issues organised by MCA Lumut division here yesterday.

"I would like to see if those summonses exist or are just lies created to politicise the issue," he said.

A Chinese daily had quoted Teja assemblyman Chang Lih Kang on Thursday as saying he would not pay seven AES summonses with fines totalling RM2,100.

When contacted by The Star yesterday, Chang confirmed the report, saying his personal assistant had found out about the summonses from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) website.

He said that among the locations he was purportedly caught speeding were in Kuala Kangsar and Subang Jaya.

Chang said it was not his inten-tion to encourage the people to break the law.

"It is just my non-violent way of protesting against the new system," he added.

On Oct 17, Chang and several Opposition leaders staged a demonstration in front of the state JPJ headquarters in Ipoh to express their disapproval of the AES.

Kong reiterated that the AES was introduced to improve traffic safety among motorists.

"The AES, which is implemented in more than 90 countries worldwide, has effectively reduced traffic accidents by more than 50%," he said.

He said that about 400,000 accidents occured in Malaysia every year, adding that there were 6,877 fatalities last year.
