Cleared slope cause for concern in Serdang
THE recent clearing of a slope near Jalan Desa Serdang 20 has resulted in the earth being washed down to the residential area during a heavy downpour.
Residents at the low-rise apartment said their carpark had been flooded with muddy water twice since the slope was cleared. Low Boh Chan, 47, said the water almost covered the car tyres.
She added that her daughter's car could not start when they tried to move it to a safer place.
"We ended up pushing the car in the rain," she said.
Traces of mud were still visible when Serdang parliamentary liaison officer Datuk Yap Pian Hon visited the site recently, after receiving complaints from residents.
Yap said the slope was believed to be cleared for a housing development project. He urged the developer to ensure that the earthwork was not done at the expense of the residents.
"A system to discharge water from the slope must be in place.
"Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) should monitor the situation closely and make sure that development guidelines are followed," he said.
Low said the developer did clean up the mud in the area when it was flooded for the first time.
Serdang MCA division vice- chairman Datuk Dr Lai Kwong Choy, who was also present, said the residents were wondering if the new development would use the same access road as the current residents.
He urged MPKj and the elected representatives to attend to the problem.
"A briefing session should be organised to inform the residents of the development," he said.
When contacted, MPKj councillor Mohammad Ali Khair Abdul Ghafar said the developer had been fined RM25,000 for carrying out the earthwork without permission.
"They have settled the fine and submitted the required application for the development. We are now considering their application," he said.
He clarified that the houses would not be built on the slope itself, but nearer to the base.
"The residents have been informed of the progress. It is not a big issue," he said.
