DAP reps ‘should emulate’ party chairman

PETALING JAYA: DAP MPs and state assemblymen should emulate party chairman Karpal Singh's example and contest in only one seat, said MCA Youth deputy chief Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.

"This will enable them to give their fullest attention to their electorate, be it parliamentary or state seat, rather than be pre-occupied with one constituency above another or mixing up national and state issues.

"It comes as no surprise that, once again, Karpal rides alone," he said in a statement here yesterday.

Dr Mah said DAP lawmakers who were incumbents at both the federal and state levels were openly at odds with him in their reluctance to relinquish one of their seats for the next general election.

On Friday, Karpal had urged DAP leaders who held both parliamentary and state seats to publicly express a willingness to give up one of them.

He has since come under fire from other party leaders, with national organising secretary Teresa Kok describing it as an "old story" and four-term DAP assemblyman Datuk Teng Chang Khim saying that it was unwise to raise it in the media.

DAP legislators, said Dr Mah, should ask themselves why they wanted to hold on to both seats and whether remuneration played a part in their decision.
