Mutual recognition between MQA & Taiwan HEEACT paves way for eventual recognition of degrees from Taiwan universities

MCA HQ, 31 July – MCA continues to make strides in obtaining the mutual recognition of university degrees from China and eventually Taiwan. Through MCA's diligent efforts, our party secured the mutual recognition of academic degrees from Malaysia and China in 2011. This year, Malaysia recognises academic qualifications from a total of 820 institutes of higher learning in China.

At a press conference held at the Council Chamber of Wisma MCA after members of the MCA Presidential Council met, party President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek highlighted on the development between Malaysia and Taiwan in terms of higher education which is a continuation of the mutual recognition of degrees between China and Malaysia.

"We recognize 820 universities in China and China recognizes over 60 universities in Malaysia. This took MCA 5 years and 3 visits: Two by the Prime Minister and one by the Deputy Prime Minister," informed the party chief before elaborating on the arrangements with the Taiwanese counterparts.

"Last year, we arranged for the Minister of Education of Taiwan to visit the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education. We set up technical committee. This is a major breakthrough.

"On the mutual recognition between the MQA (Malaysian Qualifications Agency) and Taiwan's HEEACT (Higher Education Evaluation Accreditation Council of Taiwan, we felt this is the most important step towards eventual recognition of Taiwanese degrees."

Recognition by professional bodies

Meanwhile, Soi Lek also alerted that MCA Deputy President Dato' Sri Liow Tiong Lai had also brought up the matter involving recognition of professional qualifications like medicine, pharmacy, dentistry.

"There are professional qualifications like medicine, dentistry and pharmacy which require professional recognition from both countries. Professional accreditation takes some time because the syllabus and teaching need to be looked at."
