Hudud a religious obligation for PAS, warns MCA

MCA HQ, 31 July – Implementing hudud law is not merely a political agenda by PAS but it is a religious obligation for them said MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek today.
Chiding DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng for saying that DAP and PAS can work together, Soi Lek brought up the separation of DAP from PAS in 2001, back when the opposition alliance was known as Barisan Alternatif.
"In 3 January 2006, Guan Eng said that DAP will not return to Barisan Alternatif unless PAS rejects its Islamic state ambition," said Soi Lek, pointing out the contradicting stands taken by Guan Eng in a span of a mere 6 years.
Dismissing allegations that certain quarters in UMNO wanted hudud as well, Soi Lek explained that these were just a few people who had come up with crazy ideas and wanted attention.
"If it (wanting to implement hudud) comes from the Prime Minister, we will be very excited," said the party President. Explaining that UMNO has some 3.5 million members, Soi Lek said that MCA will not hold strongly onto what some minor official in UMNO had said, while dismissing claims that MCA was setting a benchmark. "I had already tweeted that he (UMNO Kemelah state assemblyman Ayub Rahmat) was bankrupt of ideas."
Other members of the MCA Presidential Council gathered at the press conference besides Soi Lek were Deputy President Dato' Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Vice Presidents Dato' Ir Donald Lim Siang Chai, Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung, and senator Gan Ping Sieu. Also present were National Organising Secretary Datuk Tee Siew Kiong, Deputy Secretary General Dato' Dr Hou Kok Chung and Presidential Council member Datuk Chua Tee Yong.
