New driving syllabus to produce better drivers
A new driving curriculum is set to be introduced soon to produce better drivers, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.
He said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) were working on the new syllabus, which would be more stringent to make the younger generation of drivers more observant of the law.
"It will be implemented at all driving institutes, hopefully, by the second half of this year," said Kong after witnessing the opening of the new JPJ building by Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah at Indera Mahkota here yesterday.
He said there were about 570,000 new drivers last year and they were mostly from the younger generation.
Asked if the Kejara system should be revamped considering the large number of new drivers, he said it would be maintained to complement the new syllabus.
"Kejara will still be there but we are looking into a more effective way of implementation," said Kong.
On another matter, he said the public was largely unaware that a fraction of the RM3.17bil in revenue collected by JPJ last year was from number plate tenders.
About RM180mil was collected from vehicle owners who bid for their favourite numbers, he said.
Kong added that JPJ was expecting an increase in revenue collection by at least 7% this year.
