350,000 divorce cases since 2000

THERE were 354,750 divorce cases between 2000 and 2011, out of which 293,258 involved Muslims and 61,492 non-Muslim couples.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Heng Seai Kie revealed the numbers in reply to a question by Chong Eng (DAP-Bukit Mertajam).

To Chong's query if the ministry intended to amend the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 to improve the protection of children in terms of payments and maintenance, Heng said it came under the purview of the National Registration Department.
