Assemblyman assures owners that quick rent rate will be rectified
KUANTAN: The hike of between 400% and 500% in quit rent for some properties in Kuantan is due to a technical error, Semambu assemblyman Datuk Pang Tsu Ming said.
Pang said he had brought up the matter to the attention of the Land and Mines Office (PTG) which would be submitting a paper to the state government to rectify the matter.
"There will be good news soon for these property owners as I was told that the previous rate for quit rent will be applicable.
"The public have nothing to be worry about as the matter is being looked into urgently," he said.
Pang, who is the chairman of a sub-committee formed to tackle the problem last year, said a blanket approval needed to be obtained from the state executive councillors before reverting to the old rate.
In detailing the matter, he said the rate was reviewed every 10 years and the last revision was done in 2007.
"According to the rate approved in 1997 and gazetted, property owners are to pay 50 sen per square feet.
"However, in the 2007 revision, the rate for mixed development and commercial projects was fixed at RM2.50 per square metre and RM9.90 per square metre for residential properties," he said, adding that due to the differences, it had resulted in a tremendous hike.
Pang said as such, the PTG had agreed to de-gazette the 2007 rate, and postpone its implementation to a later date, to sort out the technicality.
He said once the state councillors had given the green light, the 1997 rate would be applicable to the ratepayers.
Pang said he was also looking into several projects that faced problems obtaining strata titles.
"For example, projects in Taman Aman and Taman Rasa Sayang were initially applied as residential project but these have now been expanded to include apartments, flats, condos and commercial lots.
"This resulted in a delay in issuing the titles as the project must be re-submitted and the plans changed accordingly to reflect its mixed development status," he said.
