Bitter pill for mechanic

Mechanic Tan Lai Heng had been diligently paying his insurance premiums for his family members to an agent for the last three years.

But he found out recently that most of the cheques did not make it to the insurance firm.

The 29-year-old said he discovered the agent had "amended" his cheques to that of the agent's or his girlfriend's name, resulting in a loss of RM16,170.90 in total.

"I am disappointed that I cannot make any insurance claim when my wife needs it," he said during a press conference yesterday. "What security do I have now?"

Tan said his wife had sought treatment at a private hospital in January and was advised to undergo surgery. He then contacted his agent to enquire about the procedure for insurance claims but the agent advised him not to present the insurance medical card as he claimed that the surgery and hospitalisation bill would be hiked up by 40%.

When he insisted, the agent gave even more excuses to discourage him from using the card.

Suspicious, Tan contacted an insurance agent-friend of his to check on the status of his policies and was shocked to find that all were terminated in July last year.

Tan said that except for the first cheque (RM3,910.30) he passed to the agent in 2009, the insurance company had received none of the subsequent payments.

He then sought copies of the cheques from the bank and found that these had been amended to the agent and his girlfriend's names.

Tan lodged a police report on the missing funds on Feb 28 and against the agent on March 2.

MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong urged those issuing cheques to draw a line across the space after the recipient's name.

He said he would also propose to insurance companies to allow the name of the company written and added with "for (payee's insurance account)."

Chong urged the insurance firm to get back to Tan as soon as possible while reminding banks to be careful when there were amendments made on cheques.
