MCA Youth holds peaceful demos in support of Wee

Demonstrations must be held peacefully and any form of violence is unacceptable, said MCA Youth as its members rally around their chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Some 200 people yesterday gathered outside the United Chinese School Committees Association (Dong Zong) building here in a show of support for the Deputy Education Minister.

The supporters, wearing white shirts, gathered behind large banners with Chinese slogans and proverbs, such as one that denounced violence.

Among those present were MCA Youth vice-chairman Datuk Yoo Wei How, the movement's information bureau chief Dr Kow Cheong Wei and Selangor MCA Youth treasurer Looi Eng Hua.

In Ipoh, Perak MCA Youth held a similar show of support in front of the party headquarters.

Holding banners, some 30 of them denounced attempts by participants of last Sunday's Dong Zong rally to intimidate and assault Dr Wee.

"Please give some time for Dr Wee to solve the shortage of Chinese school teachers.

"He has been doing his best," said Ipoh Timur MCA Youth chief Tony Khoo.

Separately, in Kajang, the man who is alleged to have assaulted Dr Wee has lodged a police report.

Retiree Lee Siak Ta'a, 65, said that some Chinese dailies had reported that he had hit Dr Wee. He said he was only there to accompany a friend.

"When I saw him (Dr Wee), I got enraged and went up to question him about his inability to tackle Chinese education issues and yelled at him. I made a thumbs-down sign and pointed at him.

"It was chaotic and there were people pushing me from behind. I may or may not have accidentally touched his cheek. Even if I did, it was not intentional."

Meanwhile, in Kuala Lumpur, Dr Wee said he would cooperate with the police following a report lodged over the case.

Dr Wee added that five others who were with him during the incident would also come forward to help in the investigations.

He insisted that in the incident where he was verbally abused, objects were hurled at him and he was even almost assaulted by an unidentified person despite DAP claiming otherwise.
