Big plans for Kampung Cina
KUALA TERENGGANU: The city's Kampung Cina is set to be transformed into a bustling mini metropolitan complete with high-rise buildings as well as hotels and residential areas.
The project, on a 4.3ha site, aims to redevelop the area behind the famous ancient temple at the village, dubbed China Town.
A twin 26-storey building, shophouses, international hotels and affordable residential condominiums are in the pipeline.
Terengganu MCA chief Datuk Toh Chin Yaw said the state government recently approved the redevelopment plan, which is set to be undertaken by Kampung Tiong Development Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the YTL group.
"Kampung Cina is already a tourist attraction. We are always looking to develop it further in order to enhance its appeal," he said.
Toh said the project is at the land acquisition stage, involving more than 80 landowners, who will be duly compensated.
"The land acquisition is set to cost millions of ringgit and will be completed by this year.
"The project is set to take off by the end of this year and completed within three years," he added.
Toh, who is Bandar assemblyman and a state executive councillor, said the state government fully supported the private initiative behind the project as it was difficult for individual land owners in the area to do so.
He assured that the people of Kampung Cina would be given priority to purchase the apartments and shophouses.
