KUALA LUMPUR: There is no serious shortage of teachers in Chinese schools, said Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.
He refuted claims by the United Chinese Schools Committees Association (Dong Zong) that the shortage in such schools was serious and demanded evidence from the Chinese education movement.
"We have had 11 meetings involving Jiao Zong (United Chinese School Teachers Association) and Chinese schools headmasters association, and we have been monitoring the situation on the ground.
"The serious shortage of Chinese school teachers is now a thing of the past. I am going to meet with the SJK (C) inspectors to study the issue more closely," he said after presenting awards to student athletes at the MSSM-Milo 2012 here yesterday.
Dr Wee heads a special committee set up by the Education Ministry to solve the issue of teacher shortage in Chinese schools.
Among the proposals was to redeploy secondary school teachers with Chinese language qualifications to serve at Chinese primary schools.
"The idea of transferring secondary school teachers to teach at Chinese primary schools is not unusual. We are trying to tackle the problem and not prolong the issue," he said.
On another topic, Dr Wee said the move to encourage schoolchildren to take up sports under the "1Student 1Sport" policy would help inculcate the values of healthy living among them from young.
However, Dr Wee said curbing obesity among schoolchildren was not the responsibility of the Education Ministry alone.
He said parents also needed to play a role.
He was commenting on the joint initiative with the Health Ministry to target overweight children in schools.
During his speech at the MSSM-Milo award ceremony, he also said Malaysia had been selected to host the inaugural Asia School Track and Field Championship in September as well as the Asia School Hockey Championship next year.
