School to upgrade basketball court

Cracked surface: The floor of SJK(C) Guntong's basketball court will be repaired entirely once the school receives the RM100,000 allocation.

PUPILS from SJK(C) Guntong are looking forward to having a new basketball court.

With a RM100,000 allocation approved by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during his visit to Buntong last Tuesday, work will be carried out to upgrade the school's existing basketball court so that pupils can carry out their extra-curricular activities in a safer manner.

Board of governors chairman Soo Kok San said there were cracks on the cement floor of the basketball court, which could cause the pupils to trip and fall during sports practise.

"There was an incident where our basketball coach accidentally lost his balance after stepping onto the cracks and injured himself.

"We do not wish for such mishaps to happen again," he said.

Soo said the 30-year-old unsheltered basketball court had undergone several minor repairs in the past but the problem of the cracked floor remained unsolved.

"We hope to carry out the upgrading exercise as soon as we receive the allocation," he added.

Headmistress Chen Chiew San said the school hoped to make basketball the pupils' favourite sport once again with the upgrading of the basketball court.

"The school has in the past, produced several excellent basketball players," she added.

Buntong Barisan Nasional service centre head Choo Kean Seng said he was grateful for the allocation granted by Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister.

Choo said the allocation had been made possible by Ipoh Barat MCA division chief Datuk Tan Chin Meng, who had submitted a memorandum containing the school's requests to Muhyiddin during the latter's recent visit.
