Building a hospital for the poor-Temple chief hands over proposal to Health Minister

THE Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang has taken a significant step in its plans to build a five-storey hospital at its foot-hill.

Temple chief abbot Venerable Seck Jit Heng handed over the hospital proposal to Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai at a ceremony at the temple's Five Direction Buddha Hall yesterday.

The handover ceremony was witnessed by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and local MCA leaders.

Liow praised the temple for its plans to build a hospital for the poor.

He said he would personally assist the temple in getting the hospital approved but added that the temple committee had to ensure that all the guidelines were strictly followed.

"We are happy to note that the temple will be giving free hospital services to the poor. It has always been the Malaysian Government's aspiration to continue to upgrade health services in the country.

"We will continue to help and support the private sector and NGOs in building more healthcare facilities," Liow said.

Temple trustee Datuk Steven Ooi said the hospital would have a built-up area of 50,000sq ft.

"We already have a reply from the Ministry of Health which did not have any objections to our plans but we have to follow the guidelines strictly to have our proposal approved.

"We must also get the approval from the local council before we can start any work but this is already a good start for us," he said.
