Violence against reporters unreasonable; Pakatan's double standards must cease

The regrettable incident where Guan Ming Daily reporter Ang Kian Seang was attacked whilst covering a story can be attributed to the Pakatan state government's practice of preventing media freedoms to avert negative news of Penang state from making the news, which now has resulted with violent behaviour against reporters.

Although Pakatan claims to support press freedoms, they obviously hold double standards whereby news coverage is only limited to reports which are positive and give an advantage to their state government. Once any news convey any negative message, Pakatan will suppress all aspects, including having their supporters use the media to slander their opponents with vulgar language and then turn a blind eye.

It should be pointed out that violence against Guan Ming Daily reporters is nothing new. In another incident where the media corp had covered a large gathering in which Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim attended, his security personnel had deployed brute force on not only the journalists but on photographers too. In Kedah, newspaper reporters covering interviews by Pakatan leaders were unreasonably ordered out resulting in all the reporters walking out in protest.

Besides adopting an indifferent attitude towards the earlier assault against reporters, Pakatan leaders also failed to investigate nor act against the assailants but appear to condone such actions. This creates a wrong impression to supporters that violence can solve all problems.

The Penang state government should conduct a probe on the Volunteer Patrol Team (PPS) since the Guan Ming Daily reporter was brought to a beat base used by PPS and take action against the persons responsible for injuring him. The Penang administration must also provide a reasonable explanation to the public on the behaviour of PPS since the PPS is an NGO established by the state government.
