The Star gearing up for tourney with two friendlies
IN its preparation for the Datuk Theng Book Cup Malaysia Media Badminton Championship next year, The Star organised two friendly matches.
In the first friendly match against Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad held at Menara Great Eastern in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur recently, Great Eastern edged The Star 3-2.
It was a first for The Star badminton team players where they played in an air-conditioned environment on a rubberised badminton court.
During the friendly, Great Eastern, headed by senior vice-president and also head of training and development Andy Ng Yen Heng, hosted a wonderful buffet spread with drinks for players and supporters who attended the match.
Ng said the company placed emphasis on employees having balance of work and leisure.
He said the company had a gymnasium and sports facilities for employees to lead a healthy lifestyle.
"Besides this, we have organised events such as 1 Great Eastern Family Carnival, Live Great Run, Yoga For Life while sending our staff into buses for the Great Eastern Women's Run in Singapore for the last four years.
"We hope to have more friendly matches such as futsal. bowling, table tennis and golf besides badminton,'' he said,
In another friendly match, The Star lost 2-3 to MCA at Forum 19 badminton courts in Section 19, Petaling Jaya recently.
Theng Book, who represented MCA, said this was the second time The Star organised a friendly with their team.
"Our players play regularly about three to four times weekly and this is why they are consistent and reliable,'' he said.
The Star badminton team captain Nelsen Ng said this was good exposure for the team to be prepared mentally and physically when competing in a tournament.
In 2011 and this year, The Star finished third in Datuk Theng Book Cup Malaysia Media Badminton Cham-pionship and hope to improve on its result.
"With more friendly matches, our players would become more exposed and lose the fear of playing in a competition and more importantly be physically fit and consistent,'' he said.
