MCA charity drive raises RM595,000 for school

KUALA LUMPUR: The fish head noodles cost at least RM100 per bowl but it was for a very good cause.

A charity sale of fish head noodles organised by MCA National Youth in Jalan Beruang here managed to raise RM595,888 for the construction of SM Chong Hwa in Kuantan.

"Our target was RM50,000. But today, with the overwhelming support from the public, we have far exceeded that target. This is a record," MCA Youth chief Datuk Wee Ka Siong said yesterday.

He presented a mock cheque of the sale proceeds to Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah.

Wee said about 500 visitors and sponsors visited the stall from 8am to 2pm to buy the noodles, which were priced at RM100, RM500 and RM1,000.

Visitors included Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and radio deejay Jack Lim.

Wee said they had organised about 13 fund-raising events for the school so far, with eight or nine more projects to go.

He said MCA Youth had pledged to raise RM1mil for the school, and had already succeeded in raising that amount.

Construction work is scheduled to begin next year.

Among those who made the noodles were husband and wife team Charlie Ng and Joanne Lee, who have been running the popular Little Eat stall in Jalan Beruang for over 12 years.

The couple, who are in their 50s, said they normally did not work on Sundays but came to work to help a good cause.

"I wanted to help my friends out," a jovial Lee said.
