Chua: Don’t limit rebate to phones which cost below RM500

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM200 rebate for smartphones should not be limited to devices which cost RM500 and below, says the MCA.

Party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said putting a ceiling price of RM500 would result in youths purchasing low-grade products instead of the better quality ones.

"We want to optimise smartphone usage among youths," he said, adding that it would be better if the ceiling price was abolished.

On a separate matter, Dr Chua condemned pro-Umno bloggers for twisting casual remarks he made during a closed-door gathering recently.

"They were not interested in helping MCA but trying to get a scoop," said the MCA president during the Dong Zhi reunion dinner at the Cheers Palace restaurant in Cheras here.

He blamed a blogger for publishing his remarks against his predecessor Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

At the meeting with a group of pro-Umno bloggers on Wednesday, Dr Chua was reported to have accused Ong of sabotaging him through a "faction" of supporters in Malacca.

Pro-Umno blogger Syed Akbar Ali (syedoutsidethebox.blogspot.com), who was at the meeting, claimed that Dr Chua had predicted Ong would possibly leave the party if the general election resulted in a hung parliament.

In condemning the published statements, Dr Chua said MCA leaders had understood his intentions and were supportive of him.
