Lim hits out at DAP call for ban on ‘sexy singers’
SHAH ALAM: The MCA has hit out at a proposal by DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke to ban "sexy singers" at all party functions, calling it an over-reaction.
Party vice-president Datuk Donald Lim said it was normal that everyone should act decently and dress moderately when in public places.
"This is a small issue which they seem to be harping on. I think they are over-reacting.
"I think organisers of events would know (how to judge what is indecent) and there is no need for a ban.
"How many bans do they want to impose?" he questioned when met at the Karnival Sayangi Selangor at i-City here yesterday.
Lim said the DAP and Selangor government should have "better things to do" such as ensuring contractors were efficient in rubbish collection and fixing potholes.
"They (the DAP) are only thinking about publicity. If they are sincere, they should remind the organisers to be considerate when holding future events," he said.
It was reported that Loke had proposed that guidelines be drawn up and distributed to all DAP branches to prevent performers from dressing inappropriately at party functions.
He stressed that this move had nothing to do with pressure from PAS, its ally in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
The proposal came following a controversy in Telemong, Bentong last month when a performance at a DAP dinner was halted abruptly after complaints that the singer was dressed too sexily.
The villagers who attended the event were upset over the cancellation.
Earlier this week, MCA central committee member Datuk Ti Lian Ker slammed Loke's proposal saying it amounted to the DAP endorsing the policies of PAS as well as supporting the Islamist party's interpretation of decent dressing for non-Muslims.
He said sleeveless shirts and shorts were deemed inappropriate by PAS, questioning whether the DAP and PAS were now becoming "moral and fashion policemen".
