Thrilled to start school
BELIEVING in the better discipline and exposure, engineer Zaid A.B. Md Zulfa enrolled his daughter at SJK (C) Keong Hoe in Sungai Dua, Penang.
Zaid, 35, who was at the school to oversee the registration of his daughter Zaara Najwa Zaid for Year One, said he had hired a teacher to teach his daughter Mandarin twice a week.
He said his daughter had also learnt basic Mandarin in kindergarten.
"She was about to cry when we arrived at the school but her fear disappeared when she saw her old friends from her kindergarten," he said at the school yesterday.
Housewife Vanessa Yeap, 34, who was also spotted at the school, said her son, Lye Wyai Hon, six, was excited to explore the school, which he said was bigger than his kindergarten.
At SK Sungai Ara in Bayan Lepas, six-year-old Tania Suneha Kaur was so excited about entering Year One that she woke up at 5am on registration day.
Housewife Sharon Kaur, 38, said her daughter woke her up and said that "It's time to go to school".
"But it was still early so I told her to go back to sleep," said Sharon who brought her daughter to register for Year One at the school yesterday.
Tania was among 223 pupils who attended orientation day at the school where they answered questions in Bahasa Malaysia and Mathematics. The results will determine their placement in classes.
At another class, Muhammad Farhan Hilmi, six, attracted amused looks from parents as he sat alone outside his classroom.
Although he knew some friends in his class, he insisted on sitting outside the classroom where he felt more comfortable.
He said his parents were at the school.
Bahasa Malaysia teacher Wan Norzihan Razidan, 29, said that there were pupils who cried but stopped after being comforted by their parents and teachers.
