State to usher in CNY with performance of 100 lions and nine dragons
PERAKIANS will be wowed by the dance performances of 100 lions and nine dragons at the state-level Chinese New Year celebration in Ipoh on Jan 28.
"We want to usher in the new year with a grand celebration as 2012 is the Year of the Dragon, signifying success, prosperity and loyalty to the Chinese community," said state executive councillor Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.
Up to 10,000 people are expected to attend the open house to be held at the Ipoh Padang from 6pm to 11pm.
Dr Mah said the organising committee also planned to be listed in the Malaysia Book of Records for having the largest number of lions performing at one location.
It's official: Dr Mah with Ipoh City Council secretary Datuk Abd Rahim (second right) and organising chairman Ho You Meng (second left) unveiling buntings for the CNY celebration.
"The previous record was 168 lions so the organising committee is now targeting to have 200 lions from troupes all over Perak and other states if necessary," he said, calling for more lion dance troupes to participate in the event to help them get the recognition.
There is also a Chinese martial arts demonstration by winners at the National Wushu Championship and the Southeast Asia Tai Chi competition.
Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah and his consort Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Bainun, together with Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and his wife Datin Seri Saripah Zulkifli are expected to attend.
The event is organised by the state government in collaboration with the Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Perak Chinese Assembly Hall, various Chinese associations and non-governmental organisations.
