More than 100 stalls dish out local delights at the Ipoh Street Food Fest

WITH the aroma of grilled satay and fried char kuey teow in the air, hungry visitors to the Ipoh Street Food Festival at the popular Tong Sui Kai or Dessert Street were left salivating.

They were spoilt for choice with the variety of food being offered by about 100 stalls.

Other delicacies offered were dried meat jerky, dim sum, fried radish, soya bean milk, tau fu fah, roast duck and other Ipoh specialities.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong who visited the stalls said Ipoh food was "always the best."

"No matter which hawker stall or coffeeshop you go to, the food will be fantastic.

"Unlike in the capital city where food is prepared by foreign workers, food here is prepared by its original chefs using their traditional recipes and methods," Lee said during the opening of the three-day carnival on Friday.

Lee added that tourism and food always went hand-in-hand.

"Food, like our eco-tourism and historical sites, is one of our many attractions.

"It will help generate more revenue for the country," he said.

Lee also said the state was expecting up to five million visitors during Visit Perak Year next year.

"I urge all those involved in the tourism industry to be well prepared to welcome the visitors.

"Make sure the tourists have a memorable time here," Lee said.

The food carnival was held over the weekend from Dec 23 to Dec 25 and the stalls started selling mouth-watering dishes from 6pm to midnight.

Event organising chairman Ong Siew Geok said a singing competition also kept the visitors entertained.
