Mahaguru58 visits Kuala Terengganu ~ Durians galore at Pasar Payang

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

I was in Kuala Terengganu with my missus. We reached there safely around 5.00pm on Tuesday, 27th December 2011.

It rained every now and then during our drive from Kuala Lumpur. The traffic was smooth and there were no hiccups along the way.


I was lucky to have driven at a steady pace not exceeding the 110km/hr speed limit for I spotted a lone traffic policemen with his radar gun aimed at oncoming cars at one part of the East Coast Expressway. He was not visible from afar and I am sure that he has caught many speeding motorists today.


We had grilled Grouper at one of the restaurants here. There was no accompanying sauce for dipping together with the grilled fish. I guess each state has their own peculiarities or maybe it so happened that this particular restaurant served their grilled fish that way? Whatever it is, its gonna be a first and last visit to that enterprise, for sure?

Ana Ikan Bakar Petai over at Tanjong Lumpur, Kuantan served the best grilled fish (pic above) and their dipping sauce is simply quite delicious. 

So to me, if we are to look for the best grilled fish and seafood outlet the next time we are in Kuantan, we should just head over to the seaside restaurant very early in order to beat the crowd. :)

Pasar Payang Market during daytime

Well, after our dinner, we drove on to the area of Pasar Payang and discovered so many durian sellers plying their fruits alongside the ro! ad.

There were two prominent types or species of durians being promoted. One was the D24 variety and a 'Musang King' species being sold.

As a diabetic, I can no longer indulge in eating durians. My blood sugar level would go bonkers! :P So, it was just a case of going around looking at the heaps of delicious looking durians and taking photos of the scene there.

Those of you who have normal blood sugar levels should go try those durians for they were being sold at quite an affordable price.

The durian sellers were quite friendly and didn't mind chatting with me who was just looking around. Good for them. Keep up being friendly! 

I found the Terengganu folks to be generally quite friendly and courteous to visitors like myself. 

No wonder that Kuala Terengganu gets lots of visitors and tourists visiting the state even though its quite a distance from KL and even during this monsoon season. 

This shy young man was selling all kinds of local delicacies and local traditional food products. Among the items I found being sold to my dismay was preserved turtle eggs. They were being sold at 5 eggs for RM20 @ USD$ 5.70 a pack.

Do we really need to see such atrocity still take place here in Terengganu? Its not like Terengganu folks can't find other kinds of eggs to satisfy their need for protein? 

The authorities must enforce the law regardless whether the turtle eggs being sold are from Sabah, Sarawak or from the Philippines as claimed in this report here.

Turtles are an endangered species and must be protected from going extinct. It makes no difference as to where these turtle eggs are sourced from?

According to an old news report shown below, such sales of turtle eggs were said to be banned but looks like it was just another case of NATO! No Action..Talk Only!

Malaysia is notorious for having all kinds of laws gazetted by Parliament but enforcement of such laws usually becomes a rare occurrence. Woe betide any enforcement officers who dare to uphold them. They will be hounded and harassed by those who break such laws and usually end up getting heat just for doing what they are supposed to do in the first place?

After buying some local products there at the stalls before Pasar Payang, we headed back to our hotel to rest.
