MBPJ to build apartment’s abandoned block in Petaling Utama

AFFORDABLE homes will be built for the 276 buyers of Block E, Petaling Utama in PJS 1, as the Selangor government has decided to repossess the land from the developer who had failed to build the apartment units as planned.
The state has been forced to repossess the land and appease the public who are angry with the state government for not resolving the nine-year old problem.
Buyers of the Block E housing project were left in the lurch when the developer reneged on its agreement to build the apartments in 2003.
It is learnt that the buyers had paid deposits for their apartments and that some were still servicing bank loans although the project never took off.
Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has drawn up a building plan for two blocks of affordable high-rise apartments comprising 480 units and 10 shoplots.
Mayor Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad, who confirmed this, said the problem would be resolved by April.
"The move to repossess the land from the developer, Peter's Brickworks Sdn Bhd, was made by the state.
"Affordable apartments measuring 800sq ft and costing RM70,000 will be built but sold to the Block E buyers at RM35,000 per unit," she said after the council's full board meeting yesterday, adding that the development will include a recreational area, community orchard, food court, hall, kindergarten, surau and a Hindu temple.
Alinah said MBPJ would undertake the development of the project. "We care for the buyers and want to house them as quickly as possible. As for the 27 units at the longhouse in PJS 1, we will carry out repairs and this will cost us RM500,000.
"The repairs will include changing the roof, doors and the sewerage system," she said.
She added that to overcome flash floods that occurred near the longhouse, a bund had been built and drains widened.
Block E Residents Action Committee chairman M. Suguma-ran has been aggressive in his efforts to get the state government and MBPJ to build the apartments for the people who are mainly from the lower income group.
PJS Wanita MCA division deputy chief Datin Wong Fong Leng urged the council to organise a meeting with the 276 buyers and be transparent in providing information on the construction of the apartments.
"All buyers must be given layout plans for the apartments.
"A letter undertaking the completion of the apartments must also be given to them," she said after visiting the residents in Petaling Utama.
