Tunku Aziz concerned over DAP’s stand on April 28

KUALA LUMPUR: Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim said the DAP central executive committee's support towards the sit-in at Dataran Merdeka on April 28 showed that the party had encouraged the people to go against the law.

His concern, he said, also arose from slogans on Bersih banners that called for the square's occupation and talk by certain quarters of a "Malaysian Spring" like those in Middle East and North African countries recently.

"To say that this (the rally) could lead to a Malaysian Spring is, to me, totally irresponsible.

"That means you are prepared to see bloodshed as in Egypt," he said at his house in Sri Damansara here yesterday.

The founder and former chairman of Transparency International (TI) Malaysia said he was not against free and fair elections but was concerned about the manner in which these were to be achieved.

Tunku Aziz, who quit DAP last month, also expressed doubts over Pakatan Rakyat's ability to lead the country, adding that "it could not even agree on a shadow Cabinet".

"That's the point. Should they win and turn up in Putrajaya, they will be looking at each other on who is going to occupy what post," he said.

On another matter, Tunku Aziz said it was more appropriate for Malaysia to have a Muslim Prime Minister as the King is a Muslim.

"As Malaysia has always had a Muslim as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, it is only apt that his first minister is able to discharge duties in accordance with the requirements of the religion.

"For example, when the King goes to pray, he would expect his Prime Minister to be in that (royal) party.

"If you are not a Muslim, you'd have to stay out," added Tunku Aziz in reference to the difference in opinion between DAP national chairman Karpal Singh and PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

While agreeing with Karpal's interpretation of the Constitution, Tunku Aziz said: "He (Karpal) is right, but we also have to consider conventions and practices. We cannot ignore this."
