RM20,000 boost for factory

BUSINESSMAN Tan Kean Boo has received RM20,000 to upgrade his silk screen printing factory in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, — thanks to the 1MCA Micro Credit Scheme.

Tan, 37, received the RM20,000 cheque from Penang MCA secretary Lau Chiek Tuan, who visited his factory in Jalan Industri, Taman Tok Kun Jaya, with several MCA leaders.

"I am having financial constraints to improve my business due to rising operational costs and I am grateful to the MCA which launched the scheme to provide business loans with affordable interest," Tan told reporters after the cheque presentation ceremony.

He said he started the business three years ago and had difficulty getting loans.

"So when I came to know that MCA was introducing the low-interest 1MCA Micro Credit Scheme for those below 45, I decided to give it a try by submitting my application through Lau," he said.

Lau, who is also Bukit Mertajam Barisan Nasional coordinator, said MCA had so far given out loans totalling RM1.585mil under the scheme to recipients, comprising 86 Chinese, four Malays and two Indians nationwide.

He said apart from Tan, the other four recipients in Penang included single mothers.

Lau said MCA was always ready to help those in need.

"The reason we have set up this loan scheme is to provide financial assistance to those who face difficulties borrowing money from financial institutions," he said.

On another matter, Lau reminded MCA members that the registration for the group insurance scheme for them would end in July.

"All MCA members must register and appoint their nominees by July 31.

"The response for the group scheme is overwhelming. So far, 1,000 members from Bukit Mertajam had come forward to register.

"We also received 100 applications for new membership," he said.

Also present at the ceremony were Penang MCA Public Complaints Bureau chief and Bukit Mertajam MCA division deputy chief Tan Teik Cheng, division vice-chief Gooi Guat Lye and Penang Wanita MCA vice-chairman Goh Swee Gim.
