Prove your worth, DAP told
KUALA LUMPUR: The Opposition should prove their worth by helping to develop Chinese education rather than shout slogans and hold street demonstrations, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
Chua rubbished the Opposition's claims, in particular DAP, that MCA had not done much to help Chinese schools.
"It is they (DAP leaders) who are not helping the development of the Chinese mother tongue.
"They merely shout slogans and hold street demonstrations but have not even used the money they raised to help Chinese schools," he said in his speech at the SRJK (C) Wangsa Maju fund raising dinner on Sunday.
Dr Chua said it was MCA's tireless effort over the past years that has helped the development of Chinese education.
"Practically all boards of governors of independent Chinese schools and Chinese schools parent-teacher associations comprise MCA members.
"They have played an important role in helping the schools and the development of Chinese education.
"Over the past decade, we have helped build 16 new Chinese schools," he said, adding that this excludes 1,000 new classrooms to cater for 130,000 students.
He also noted the Education Ministry had allocated land for the development of five new Chinese schools in Selangor.
Earlier in his speech, MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who is also Deputy Education Minister, said the Government had injected some RM95mil to help build seven new Chinese schools, renovate eight others and relocate 13 schools.
The Education Ministry approved the school project last October on a 0.8ha land valued at RM20mil located along Jalan Genting Kelang donated by a developer, Platinum Victory Development Sdn Bhd.
Some RM15mil is needed for the construction of the SRJK (C) Wangsa Maju.
The Government has provided an allocation of RM6mil while the dinner raised an additional sum of RM6.8mil.
