India official hurt, in-law killed in Berjaya resort mishap

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 A top government official from India suffered spinal injuries while his mother-in-law died last Saturday after a balcony railing at the Berjaya Langkawi Resort that they had been leaning on gave way, Langkawi police said today.

Kuala Triang police chief Sergeant Amran Ahmad said Narayanan Gobalakrishnans father-in-law and six-year-old son who were also leaning against the wooden railing sustained injuries after all four fell 3m onto the rocky beach.

His father-in-law broke an arm and leg and his son broke his arm, Amran told The Malaysian Insider today.

All three victims went to Singapore yesterday to get treatment, he added.

Amran said the police ruled out foul play and classified the case as sudden death.

When they were walking along the (veranda at the) chalet, the four of them were leaning against the balcony railing while his (Narayanans) wife took pictures, said Amran.

Berjaya Langkawi Resort officials did not immediately return calls for comment.

Langkawi OCPD Superintendent Harrith Kam Abdullah said the Indian embassy was informed of the incident at the four-star hotel.

Gobalakrishnans mother-in-law Alamelu Ramamoorthy was aged 69 years.
