Health Ministry moves to create a walking society
BENTONG: The Health Ministry has allocated RM12mil for the "People's Walk" programme (Program Berjalan Bersama Rakyat) in a move to create a healthy living.
Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the walking exercise activities are part of the ministry's health carnival which will be held simultaneously in 88 districts and villages in the country.
Liow said the campaign would involve people from all walks of life to fight against lifestyle diseases.

"It will also carry a slogan 'people's health first' which will be the ministry's product," Liow said after officiating the national level celebrations of the health carnival in Dataran Bentong recently.
Earlier, Liow led some 5,000 members of the public including students, non- governmental organisations and government officers to walk three kilometres in Bentong town in the 10,000 steps per day campaign.
Also taking part were state executive councillor and Bilut assemblyman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun, Ketari assemblyman Datuk Dr Ng Keong Chye and state Health director Datuk Dr Noraini Baba.

"The walking for a 10,000 steps campaign which had started earlier is among the Government's efforts to reduce obesity.
Liow said obesity has been a threat to Malaysians because it would lead to diabetes and high blood pressure.
He said latest statistics showed diabetes and high blood pressure cases were increasing every year.
Liow said through screenings, some 2.6 million of the country's population have diabetes not including those who are having it but not detected.
