Permata Negara Centres To Implement Dental Care From Next Year

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- A dental care programme is to be implemented at all the Permata Negara early childhood care and education centres nationwide beginning next year, the prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, said Tuesday.

Rosmah, who is the founder of the Permata Negara programme, said the dental care programme would be implemented at the 600 centres for the 24,000 children to instil the habit of maintaining oral health from an early age.

An epidemiology study of oral health in 2005 found that 76.2 per cent of children below the age of five years suffered from dental caries or tooth decay, she said.

"This is most worrying because it has a negative impact on children, such as pain which interferes with the nutritional function and undermines the overall growth of the children.

"It also has an effect on the social and emotional growth and the quality of life of the children and their families," she said when launching the dental care programme, carrying the theme "Not Too Early", for assimilation into the Permata Negara programme at the Permata Negara Centre, here.

Rosmah said the dental care curriculum had been incorporated into the Permata Negara basic childcare course as a means of consolidating the programme.

"In this way, Permata Negara educators and caregivers attending the course will be exposed to various aspects of oral health which can enable them to implement the programme wherever they serve.

"This effort will empower educators and caregivers to implement the preventive measures for children under their care," she said.

Rosmah expressed her thanks to the Southern Lion Group which had agreed to supply dental care products such as toothbrush and toothpaste to the children at the Permata Negara centres.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who was present at the event, said the dental care programme was implemented in government nurseries nationwide in 2008.

"I am happy that the programme is now being extended to the Permata Negara centres, and will benefit even more children," he said.
