The trial run for the new Automated Enforcement System (AES) during Hari Raya was a success, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

"It was a good outcome. Results showed that the cameras were operating smoothly during the test run but no summonses were issued.

"The system is a good one and has been implemented in other countries. We want people to be aware and comply with the rules and road regulations as it will help reduce the number of deaths and accidents," he said after the launch of the new Pasar Seni bus hub here yesterday.

Due diligence, he said, was bring carried out to ensure everything was in order according to the legal framework and cameras correctly certified before the system could be implemented.

It was previously reported that 566 speed cameras and 265 traffic light cameras would be installed under the AES with 250 mobile cameras being used in areas with inadequate infrastructure.

The contractors' spokesman said the targeted date for the AES to start operations is Sept 9 while the remaining cameras would be rolled out in phases over the next 12 months.

On Ops Selamat which ended on Sunday, Kong said the new approach of creating awareness worked as the number of accidents and deaths had been reduced compared to last year.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said on Wednesday that Ops Selamat saw accidents and fatalities reduced by 8% during the period compared to last year.

On the RM9.5mil bus hub which would be integrated with the LRT and future MRT train station, Kong said it was in line with the goal under the National Key Result Area for public transport to increase passenger capacity.

"It will help ease traffic congestion in the city and increase passenger comfort as well as provide an easier transit to other forms of public transport," he added.

Kong said latest statistics showed that the number of passengers using the RapidKL bus service and the Kelana Jaya LRT during the peak period increased to 217,960 and 47,047 last month compared to 131,033 and 27,638 respectively in December 2009.

Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said bus hubs would also be constructed in five main corridors, namely the Syed Putra corridor, Jalan Pudu, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Pahang and Jalan Ampang as well as in two smaller corridors at Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz and Jalan Damansara.
