Overpopulated flat causes inconvenience for residents
THERE are only 476 units in the Impian Seri Setia flats in Sungai Way, Petaling Jaya, but residents have to deal with a population of more than 4,000 people within the building.
Joint Management Body (JMB) chairman Oh Loke Hooi, 57, said many of the units within the flats have been rented out to workers from a nearby manufacturing factory and some units measuring 650 sq ft could be housing up to 15 people.
"We only have four lifts that can carry about five adults at one time. We even had to resort to designating the two lifts in one block for their use so that residents can use the other two lifts," said Oh during the Petaling Jaya 1Malaysia Service Centre visit to the flats.
The JMB handed a memorandum detailing the problems faced by residents to Selangor MCA Public Complaints Bureau deputy head Kelvin Chong, which they want to highlight to Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman.
Tight squeeze: Chong showing the lift at the Impian Seri Setia flats that can barely fit six adults. The 17-storey building with 476 units houses a population of more than 4,000 people.
Resident Quek Yean Kuan, 60, said it was a nightmare for residents from 7am to 8am and from 7pm to 8pm, when the workers were leaving for or coming back from work.
"The lift lobby area would be packed with people and those of us coming down from our homes can't even get out of the lift because everyone would be trying to get in," said Quek, who moved in there more than a year ago.
Quek said the workers were mostly foreign ladies and many foreign men came looking for them at night.
"They would hang out at the corridors and also the playground. Most residents do not even dare to go near the playground during that time," she said.
Chong urged the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to send officers to investigate the number of people staying in each unit and reprimand those that had too many tenants.
"The lifts are too small for a 17-storey building. Besides this, the residents also have issues with the parking bays as only 238 units are given free of charge.
"That's not even half of the total number of units. The rest of the parking bays were sold for RM5,500 and we heard that the price has now gone up to RM8,000."
Some of the other problems faced by the residents include snatch theft and a rubbish disposal area not completed by the developer.
"I will be handing over the memorandum to the MBPJ. They should look into installing CCTVs within the flats for the security of its residents," said Chong.
